View Full Version : What brought you to your 75.... and what next?

Dawkinsrover's post about the 600 got me thinking about the cars I had before my 75 and what I would get next (assuming another 75 was not a viable option given the miles I drive every year, although a late model diesel is a possible). I've been driving for 20 years this year and the majority of my cars have been MGs or Rovers (2 at a time now that I need a seperate car for work). I just wondered what everyone else had before their 75. Some, like me, will have moved up to a 75 while others may have (in other peoples eyes) moved down from BMW, Mercedes or Jaguar to a 75. What say you?

If memory serves I've had (almost chronologically)
2 x Opel Mantas
1 x Rover 216 Vitesse
2 x Suzuki Swift Gtis
1 x Ford Fiesta (what was I thinking)
1 x Volvo 480 (never taken drugs knowingly)
2 x Rover 216 GTis
1 x Rover 214 Cabriolet
2 x Rover 216 Coupes
1 x Vauxhall Astra Coupe
1 x MGF
1 x MG TF
1 x Vauxhall Vectra SRi 1.9 CDTi
1 x Rover 45 2.0TD Spirit
1 x MG TF

Then my 75 cdt.

I hope the MG7 is in production and is a good car by the time I'm ready to change again. If not I may be tempted by a nice (but older) low mileage Jaguar S-Type Diesel.

Wish I'd discovered the 75 before that Vectra (shudders).

What about others here?

My 75 is a quite a recent acquisition, purchased due to being offered it at a very good price by a family member, she is a higher mileage CDT Club, but as we know her history I am hoping all will be well!!

In the 17 years I have been driving I have owned the following vehicles - actually some of the latter ones were company cars (these have a (c) next to them).

2 x Pug 106's first was a diesel with the 1,5 lump in, 2nd was the petrol 1.1!!!!! (I was young)
1 x Pug 405 GTXI
1 x off road spec Range Rover 3.5 V8 EFI :)
1 x Yamaha XV535
1 x Yamaha YZF600r
1 x very old fiesta 1.1 popular on an S plate (the old S)
1 x ford focus (c)
>4 x Vectra SRI's (c) Was doing hig mileage so cars were changing every 4 weeks, so 4 was a very minimum, but was far more like 8!!!!
1 x pug 406 executive (c)
1 x ford mondeo 1.8 TD (c)
1 x Renault Laguna
1 x Ford Focus TD estate (c)
1 x Audi A6 (c) (was sad to see that go!!!)
1 x Honda Prelude :)
1 x Honda Shuttle (the other halfs car)
1 x Honda Accord Aerodeck (still trying to sell)
1 x Rover 75 CDT Club

Phew, had more cars then I realised!!!!!!

IIRC in chronoligical order:

75 Club SE 1.8(current)
Accord 2.0 Vtec Coupe (big mistake)
75 Club Cdt - uprated to cdti
KV6 Sterling Coupe
400 Tourer
820Si Fastback
Cavalier 2.0GL (excellent car)
Montego 2.0SLXi (much better than expected)
416GSi
Cavalier 2.0L
Sierra Sapphire 1.6L (Cr8p
2x Escort 1.6L
2x Fiesta 1.0 (Cr8p)
Marina 1.3 Coupe

I shall probably keep to 75 / ZT as long as practically possible, given that I always buy used anyway and put about 25k a year on the car. I reckon my current car has about 18 months to 2 years before we part company and I shall replace it with another late pre-facelift 75. I haven't been able to summon up much enthusiasm about any other car as IMHO nothing comes close to the 75 in terms of comfort, quality and interior ambience for the money.

I do like the look of the Subaru Legacy Estate but, like so many cars these days, they are just so bland inside after the 75.

I bought the ZT after seeing one at the Waddington Air Show where it's stunning looks convinced me it was the car for me.
Previously I'd been mainly a Ford owner as the following list shows:-

1 X 1967 Ford Cortina Mk2 1500 Delux
1 X 1970 Ford Capri 1600XL
1 X 1971 Ford capri 1600 XL
1 X 1972 Ford Cortina MK3 2000GT
1 X 1973 Ford Cortina Mk3 2000E Auto
1 X 1976 Ford Cortina Mk3 2000GT
1 X 1979 Ford Granada Mk2 2800GL
1 X 1982 Ford Granada Mk2 2800 Ghia Auto
1 X 1983 Ford Granada Mk2 2800i Ghia X Auto
1 X 1980 Auston Maxi 1750HL
1 X 1988 Rover 820E
1 X 1988 Ford Granada Scorpio 2900i Auto
1 X 1992 Rover 820Si
1 X 1992 Ford Granada Scorpio 24V Cosworth Auto
1 X 1979 Ford Cortina Mk4 2000 Ghia Auto
1 X 1985 Ford Granada 2800i Ghia X Auto
1 X 1990 Ford Sierra 2000i Ghia 4X4
1 X 1986 Ford Granada Scorpio 2800i 4X4 ( still owned)
1 X 2002 MGZT 190+

When the time comes to move on I'll probably go for a X-type Jaguar or the latest Mondeo.

Austin Maxi 1500

Russ, my uncle had a Princess 2 litre IIRC when I was driving my first Capri (2.0GL Auto) and I got to drive it home for him one day and remember thinking it was absolute luxury.:drool4: Mind you, he was a heavy smoker and the car did smell quite badly:(.
Smooth, well sprung and a nice manual gearbox! Also, a pal at college in the late eighties brought his mum's Maxi in one day and I remember commenting on how he looked like he was stirring the soup when attempting to select a gear:pillow::D.

1973 Morris Marina 1,3 Coupé (still have it, now restored)
1978 Austin Allegro (How could I ever sell that one?)
1989 Mazda 626 (Awful)
1990 Citroën XM (now joining the Marina in the garage)
2001 Citroën C5 Estate (my wifes car)
2001/2 Rover 75 Tourer.

The Rover is racking up good mileage and I guess that reality is once it develops a serious fault I will have to look at something else. Only what? Just today I was asked what my drem car would be. My answer was: My current Rover 75 Tourer but with a V6 Diesel and four wheel drive.

Just put a bid on an old Range Rover though...

My first car was a 216 gsi auto, which was on 127k and going strong when it was nicked and wrapped around a lampost.
Second was a 416 GTI auto, nicked after 4 weeks.
Third was a 216 Gsi auto, kept for 3 years before unfortunate demise hitting a merc on the M6
Fourth was a 216 Gsi auto, kept for 2 years before being donated to little brother.
Fifth was a 416 GTI auto, kept for 6 months before being sold- still regret selling it!
Sixth is a 75 CDT, first foray into a non-honda based, non-wedge Rover and I'm loving it. Totally different car to the 416 and couldnt think of any other current car in its price bracket that I would rather own.
In terms of the next car, I want to stay with my 75 for another 3 years at least(fingers crossed), after that I would love to own an Alfa, possibly 159, the Jag XF is a possible contender, and the ultimate aim is to work my way up to a Maserati Quattroporte- four door Ferrari without the footballer connotations. Undertsated looks with blistering performance.

Since passing my driving test 6 years ago I've had my name on the V5 of this little lot, in order:

1987 (D) MG Maestro 2.0 Efi (First car, still own & treasure this one)
1997 (P) Rover 820 Si (crashed - did a good job of it too!)
1997 (R) Rover 825 Si (HGF)
1983 (Y) Austin Maestro 1.6HLS
1997 (P) Rover 820 Sterling Coupe
1975 (N) Triumph Spitfire 1500
1977 (R) Austin Allegro 1300 Super (driven to Italy on a banger rally)
1991 (H) Saab 900i (more comfortable means of getting back from Italy!!)
2003 (03) Rover 75 2.5 Connoisseur SE
1997 (P) Jaguar XJ6 3.2 Sovereign

Replacing the 75 is going to be tough because there's not much that even comes close in terms of style, but can't see it being an issue for a couple of years yet. Either a newer 75 or another Jag I guess, but circumstances change.

1980 Renault 12 TL (a shed)
1977 VW Polo (nippy but knackered)
1978 Datsun 140J Violet (rusty, and then nicked)
1980 Vanden Plas 1500 (very clapped out, ended up with Equipe 1750TC Engine)
1989 Montego 1.6 Estate (tired but capable)
1986 Saab 900 (2 door single carb saloon)
1976 Vanden Plas 1500 (lovely)
1993 Saab 900 Convertible (still have)
1980 Austin Allegro 1.3L (now a Gambian Taxi)

1984 Austin Maestro 1.3HLE (sold with under 20k on the clock)

1968 Rover 2000 TC (beautiful but troublesome)
19991 Rover 827Si Fastback (so fast so loud so much fun)

And now a 2001 75 Tourer.

Mk 2 escort 1300- fitted with 1600 engine and taken upside down ploughing in a field

pea green mk2 escort 1300, with an extremely asthmatic engine

Mk 1 mexico- roller skate onwheels- loved this car but it needed full body restoration and I had neither the skills or the money to buy another car and mothball it at the time. according to the DVLA still onthe road. ( I wish it was still mine)

Mk 2 mexico- minilites, cibies, and full group 1 suspension set up - stolen and never recovered

Mk 2 mexico- I was looking for a group 1 RS 2000 with my insurance money, and got waylaid into this- If Id got the Group 1 I would still have it today.

mk 5 cortina- runabout whilst I had the mexico for summer use . flying machine- but suspension like a trawler. paid £500 for it, 4 yars later after 1 alternator and 4 tyres got written off and paid out £550 for it !!!!

now we are into rover territory.

214 SLI 3 door. nice car but needed " more power scotty "

220 GTI- put 40000 superb miles on this , traded it in and the garage owners son wrote it off a week later

ZR 160. drover like a massey ferguson from new- wouldnt hold its tune for more than 2 weeks at a time- a proper lemon ( should have gone for the ZS180)

218 VVC coupe. Anthracite with full cream leather - went to a good home, but still cried when I sold it- should have been another "keeper " !!!

ZS180 in typhoon, GGGRROOOWWL. a proper howler of a car, stainless induction kit and custom twin exhausts. went like stink, but a bit basic inside.

MOODYBLUE ZT CDTi monogram moodyblue. very nice car with all the toys. rover ronned and webasto'ed, but never really took to it- this was the car that played second fiddle to a facelift 260 in black.

BLACK OLIVE. 4.6 litres of throbbing pleasure. £70 a week in fuel gave me a good excuse to buy the missus a Mini Cooper diesel, so I have now also have the clio as a runabout.

Im now in the priviledged position where I can use the 260 purely for pleasure, and go with the flow travelling to work 3 days a week in the clio. ( Thursday isshopping day, so the clio collects the trolley dings, and I get a mini adventure, and friday is V8 day)

I promised myself years ago that one day I would own a Rover V8, and the 260 has fulfilled that promise. with the help of this forum and the 260's it has come to light that my car is the last untouched mark 1 260 off the line, and whilst I realise the car is never going to be an investment, it is a rare piece of british motoring history, and not one which I intend to lose.

looking to the future, when the weather gets a bit better, Im going to fit my towing bracket to black olive, a caravan may or may not materialise- in theory it is a good idea, but to be honest the girls are getting a bit older, and noses are now buried in nintendo's and the Wii, whereas when they were nippers we walked for miles at weekend, now its just me and the Border terrier. The cooper diesel will be a long term car, as will the 260, Ive no intention to replace either .

Mechanically I have an interest in old stationary engines and vintage bikes, Ive a half completed model petrol engine in the garage that may get finished this year, and I would dearly love an old british bike in the garage, but made the mistake of not taking my bike test when I was younger, and cant be messed going through the motions now, so wouldnt be able to use a bike.

The next stage in cars will probably be getting the girls through their tests, and making sure they choose a suitably interesting car, and dont get in bother with them.

and now my fingers are tired ;)

Russ, my uncle had a Princess 2 litre IIRC when I was driving my first Capri (2.0GL Auto) and I got to drive it home for him one day and remember thinking it was absolute luxury.:drool4: Mind you, he was a heavy smoker and the car did smell quite badly:(.
Smooth, well sprung and a nice manual gearbox! Also, a pal at college in the late eighties brought his mum's Maxi in one day and I remember commenting on how he looked like he was stirring the soup when attempting to select a gear:pillow::D.

They were a very comforable car not too bad on fuel either.:D
I'd have to agree with you about the geachange on the Maxi (Awful, awful, car).
The thing was, with my experiences with the "M" cars that I owned I can honestly say they were absolute garbage (and mine were mainly nearly new) I lost faith in anything made by BL/Austin Rover and the thing is, so did a lot of other people. Thats why I moved on to SAAB and AUDI.

This IMHO is a good part of why MGR went under because the damage had been done in the past, and people just couldn't be persuaded to buy from them again, no matter what. Didn't matter that the company or the cars had changed, people just saw it as the same thing with a slightly different name.

So why the 75 for me? Perhaps the Viking ship (see below) but also because of the wood and leather plus the styling and, whilst I run a Tourer because of the dog, unlike some of you, I think the saloon has better lines.

My little tally – do not think I have missed any but some of the dates might be questionable.

1969 – 1958 Ford MkII Consul
1970 – 1959 Ford MkII Consul
1972 – 1960 Ford MkII Consul
1974 – 1967 HA Viva (ugh ex wifes idea)
1976 – 1967 Wolsely 18/85 (lovely car used to commute 100 miles a day)*
1981 – 1973 Rover 2000TC ^
1984 – 1974 Rover 3500 ^
1985 – 1966 Rover Development Car ex MDs – Rover V8 in 2000 shell ^
1985 – Rover 3500S RHD Export ^
1986 – 1968 Rover Development Car – 3500S Auto for Board approval ^
1987 – 1962 Ford MkII Zephyr
1988 – 1978 Austin Maxi 1750HL (used when renovating a house – amazing)
1989 – 1971 Rover 2000TC
1990 – 1988 Rover 800
1996 – Royale Sabre Kit car built by me from 1994 to 1996
1997 – 2 x 19?? Austin Ambassadors
1998 – 1996 Rover 800
2001 – 1996 Land Rover Discovery 300TDi
2007 – 2001 Rover 75 Conni SE

* memories of driving home one night and having problems, spent all night working on the engine to fix it, quick shower and then drive back to work the next morning.

^ owned at the same time

The Ford MkII still have a special place in my heart, dearly love a Zodiac rag top.

The Wolseley was quite a special car, very comfortable with the unique ride.

The P6 Rovers played quite a big part in my life.

So to the 75, which I thought looked very nice from their release – in fact far nicer looking than the Jag.

As for the future, if Moggie Minors can still be kept going then so can the 75 – if enough of us want to.

As for parts, you can get hand-made wings for Austin A60s so why not 75s.

I'm only 21 so I haven't got such a varied history as most of you guys on here, anyway here's mine:

2003 - 1973 MG Midget (first car & I learned to drive in it, great car still got it infact only took it off the road because I was at uni and it wasn't the most reliable car! My dad and I have got a 1.8 k-series VVC engine swap lined up for it :) )

2006 - 1999 Rover 200 Di (reliable car, superb engine but the rest of the car let it down)

2007 - 2003 Rover 75 Club CDT (brilliant car, such a step up from the 200!)

I intend to keep the 75 for a few years yet, and who knows maybe a ZT some time down the line :)

Here we go, since '95:

93 Metro 1.1S (somone kindly went into the back of it while stationary soon after I got it - that was the end of that one - shame as it was smart, early 'Sport' example as far as Metros go)

94 Metro 1.4Si - seemed to remember how well this one went!

97 R114 GTa - Fond memories of this one too, traded in for the following

99 R214 Si - The 200 in its day seemed a decent offering compared to rivals

01 MG ZR TD - My introduction to the flexible, yet crude L-Series

53 MG ZT 1.8T - I believe this is now owned by mykl above - traded in to raise funds for a property purchase

05 MR ZR TD 115 - Replaced the above, when new it felt better to drive than the one I had previously. Now that its aged a bit it seems a bit flimsy compared to the one I had previously and dire next to the 200. Now driven by the Mrs.

54 MG ZT CDTi 135 - My current steed. A good companion for the daily grind, but shame it seems to need something-or-other replaced every other month.

Where next, possibly a Honda Civic S-Type diesel. I want something a "little bit different".

I'd never get all my previous cars in a list as I would inevitably forget some, and as I used to have company cars for over 6 years - and changed them at one stage nearly every month - then it's a long list. I've had all sorts though, some very nice, some utter dogs (Golf VR6 springs to mind here) but The Beloved just makes me feel good. So she's staying.

Unfortunately I didn't see the article, but I've seen a BGT with a K-series swap they look nice but personally I'd be wanting a V8 in a B, I'd have a V8 in the midget if the engine bay were bigger! Your right though, I think the K-series just works so well in a midget or bgt, they almost look at home tucked in there!

Hmm let me see,

Austin Mini 1000
Ford Fiesta 950cc!
Mini Clubman Estate 1.1
Morris Ital 1.3
Morris Ital 1.3
Ford Mondeo 1.8
Vauxhall Astra 1.8 Sport
Rover 75 1.8T

I think you'll all agree the 75 is definately the pick of the bunch. The Mondeo was good, but not as smooth as the 75. The Astra was sporty but a bit old and rattly, and the first mini was a lot of fun (the drive back from Sainsburys with the car full of 5 students and their weekly shopping was interesting!). THe less said about the Ital's the better!

Then needed a bigger car, had to be diesel and an estate, so after 8 weeks of researching, settled for

Rover 75 CDT, and got what I have now.

Maybe I should have looked some more ;)

Maybe I should have done a bit more research :D:D

What next ? Even after all of my recent troubles, I would seriously consider another 75

well being the age i am i have a pretty short list!:D

1989 Mini 30 998cc (had when i was 14 untill i passed my test)

Toyota paseo coupe 1.5 (a car which i like to forget, it was like sitting inside a plastic factory)

1988 Jaguar XJS V12 5.3L ( the love of my life untill it went wrong:cry:)

and now i own the best car out of the lot, my rover!:luvya:

1983 alfasud 1.5ti( 1st car, what a comparison to ford fiesta mk2 1.1 which I learnt to drive in)

1978 alfasud 1.3ti(extremely rusty, although wonderful to drive, bought only for the engine to fit into the one above as it blew up)

1984 alfa 33 1.3s(not as good as alfasud, heater was better)

1982alfasud 1.5 gold cloverleaf(electric front windows and headlight wash/wipe, rumoured to have appeared on the program SPENDER with jimmy nail!!)

1983 alfasud 1.3ti

1989 33 1.7 green cloverleaf( twin carbs, fantastic, although handling still not as good as sud)

1983 alfasud sprint veloce sprint trofeo lhd (the ultimate alfasud version with chrome bumpers, working in italy I bought this rust free and imported it to england, kept for 6 years before selling it to a guy in france)

1994 citroen ax(pathetic performance but comfy)

1999 citroen bx

1998 renault megane 1.9d(still got it)

1994 saab 900s(wish I still had it instead of megane)

2005 75 cdti conn se tourer( 1ST BRITISH CAR)

Have to say, the 75 is the best car I've had since alfasuds.

Not a terribly long list:

Austin Mini 850 - my pride and joy!

Vauxhall Cavalier mk1 - a simply dreadful car which had a fault that meant it got through a clutch every 5000 miles and the garage couldn't find anything wrong!

2 Montegos - nice cars to drive but very poor build quality.

2 Rover 600s, the second one I had for 11 years up to this May. This car had been a real workhorse doing family holidays, university runs for my lads etc. Hardly anything ever went wrong with it. Really cheap motoring, but the clutch was starting to judder and a few other bits looked like they were needing to be replaced so I decided to quit while ahead.

Saw a Rover 75 on Autotrader. Went to see it. :drool4: Couldn't resist it. What a car for the money! :cool2:

Having used a P4, P6 then an SD1 on a regular basis at my last job, it seemed only natural to buy a 75 before it either rots away, breaks down or becomes obsolete.

I suppose a Mondeo Diesel, Sorry I meant Jaguar S Type will be next.

Despite only having passed my test 3 years ago (I am only 21), I'm already on my 6th car. So far I've had a:

1993 1.1 Peugeot 106 XR (Terrible. Had it 4 months, it spent 2 of those being repaired.)

1995 1.1 Rover 100 Kensington (HGF Killed it.)

1996 1.4 Vauxhall Astra Merit Hi-T (Sold)

1999 1.6 Rover 400 (Sold)

1997 1.6 Vauxhall Astra GLS (Sold)

2004 1.8 Rover 75 Connoisseur SE.

Possibly next I'm thinking of an Alfa Romeo GT/Brera, or a Mazda RX8. Then maybe a Ferrari :drool4:. Seriously though, I say this but I don't think I could ever bring myself to be without the beautiful 75 interior. Maybe I'd seek out a V8 75 one day to complement my Ferrari.

2000 Vauxhall Astra diesel (for work commute)

The Ferrari would be cheaper to run than an RX8. My mate had one..... 23 mpg and the oil needs topped up almost as much as the tank needs filling. Service costs are ridiculous.

I really don't understand why RX8 service costs are high. After all, the engine only has 4 moving parts. I ran a 1990 Eunos Cosmo Turbo for 3 years and it was a fantastic thing. After a rotary everything else just feels so agricultural. Yes, you do need to keep an eye on the oil and they are a bit thirsty, but nothing is so quiet and smooth, Even a V6 75 (sorry)

Well I am older than most of you and have had well over a hundred, but I do remember my 1st it was a Bond 3 wheeler convertable thats all I could afford but it was heaven compared with the freezing days of motor cycling. The battery was knackered and you had to lift up bonnet where there was a kickstart and kick like mad until she fired, it was chain driven onto the front wheel if you went over a large bump, off would come the chain you would then lift bonnet put chain back on and kick start. A little embarrising at traffic lights, but would not have missed it for anything so when you lucky people are complaining about your 75 heater only working on 1 side just be thankful you never started motoring in the50s& 60s

My favourites were

1958 Renault dauphine
1968 Vauxhall viva GT
1972 BMW 2500
1973 Lotus europa
1980 Lotus esprit
All dogs but fond memories

Don't think there's enough space on this forum to list all the cars I've had, I do tend to change them pretty often!

Off the top of my head - Started out with a beige C-reg 1.3L Austin Maestro, then a Honda Accord, a couple of Mitsubishis, an MG Maestro EFi, a Mondeo, several Saabs, about 7 Rover 800s (including two Tickford turbos), a couple of 400s, a 620ti, a few 200s, a VVC coupe, a Volvo, a Toyota Celica, and now the 75, which I hope to keep for a looooong time. :)

That's probably half the list! :jig:

What next? Hopefully not something I'll have to consider for a while, but a 75 V8 would fit the bill very nicely. :drool4:

(First post as a red member - :D )

Sheesh, some of you guys have had LOADS of cars!! I don't tend to change my cars that often (Well, ok - it was more to do with a lack of cash than anything else!) so here's my pathetic list...

1995 Fiat Cinquecento Sporting
1998 Fiat Punto Sporting
1994 Peugeot 306 XL
2004 MG ZT CDTi

...As you can see, the quality of my cars has taken a rather massive leap from mid-2008 to now! I hope to keep my ZT for a long time, too...

I got the ZT because my eyes would almost literally bulge every time I saw one drive past, and I had a 'Wayne's World' moment. You will be mines, oh yes, you will be mines. :drool4:

You know, I didn't put what would be next! I reckon I'll keep the 75 for 18 months or so, but after that it's a very short list of wants;

05 / 06 MG ZT CDTi Saloon
Porsche Boxster
BMW E46 330d

The way the market is going though, it's hard to imagine not going for the MG..

Here are all the vehicles I have owned.

1956/58 James Captain De Luxe 198cc 2 stroke motor bike.

1958 Morris Minor Series E (1939 model). Owned jointly for about six months with my girl friend and we sold it to enable me to buy an engagement ring.

Mid 1958/63 – Married in 1958. Didn't own any vehicle. Couldn't afford one.

1963/65 a very old Vauxhall Cresta, 6 cyl. 3litre saloon. Front bench seat, 3 speed transmission, steering column mounted gear lever. Great for having the wife snuggling up to me on the front seat.

1965/70 Vauxhall Victor FB saloon, 1.6litre, 3 speed transmission, steering column gear change.

1970/73 Vauxhall Victor 2000, 2 litre saloon. 4 speed gearbox with "sporty" floor mounted gear lever. Bought it to have a car better able to tow our caravan but it wasn’t much better than the Victor FB.

1973 Morris 1100, 1098cc Passed on to us from father-in-law after he had bought a new car while we were in the process of selling one house and buying another. Needed to minimise cash flow. Car written off after a few weeks in an accident on an icy road junction.

1973/81 Toyota Carina 1.6 litre saloon. Temporarily increased the overdraft to buy my first ever new car. Towed our caravan beautifully despite being a much smaller engine than the Victor 2000.

1981/87 Austin Princess 1.8 litre saloon. Bags of room for the three kids and boot like a cave. Great suspension and great road grip, even in the snow. It towed the caravan well but we gave up caravanning from 1985 onwards.

1987/91 Citroen BX 16RS hatchback, 1.6 litre. The one with the driver adjustable three heights of suspension. Very comfortable ride.

1991 2nd hand Rover Montego 1.6 litre saloon. Traded in when I got a company car.

1991/94 Renault 19 GTS-X 5 door hatchback, 1.4 litre saloon. (my first company car)

1994/97 Toyota Carina 2 litre diesel saloon. (my second company car)

1997 Renault Laguna 1.8 litre hatchback. (my third and last company car before I retired)

1997/2000 New car. Nissan Primera GX 1.6 litre hatchback.

2000/2005 New car Rover 75 Club SE 1.8 saloon. This car written off after an accident in Sept 2005. Took up caravanning again from Oct 2004 onwards.

2005 to date Rover 75 Connoisseur 1.8 saloon (2004 model). Had fancy removable towbar fitted.

Ideally my next car will be a diesel powered R75 tourer if such be available but it won't be for a few years as I am very happy with the present R75 and we don't do many miles these days.

Hi, I've had the following...

Rover SD1 2600(Still think they look great)
Austin Maestro 1.6L
MG Maestro 2.0 EFI(fantastic car)
Rover 114SLI
Mini one(only had for 3months, got refund because of all the faults.BMW quality!)
MG ZR 120+
Mercedes A160
Subaru Legacy 2.0
Rover 75 conn se cdt

I'll probably retire the 75 in a couple of years as my daily driver and pamper it at the weekends. I will most likely replace it as my daily driver with an X type Jag.

A list of the vehicles I have driven in reverse order from todays Rover 75. Celeste
I have spent a lot of time in Germany of late hence the mixed list of RHD and LHD cars.
I tend to adopt cars I really like as family pets and the 2 Rovers and the Triumph PI are my true favorites.
Once they reach that status they are kept running as long as possible.
The Lexus I must admit is also a very nice car and wins the reliability award. Not one fault in 125,000 kms !
Now wheres the fun in that ?? My current Rover 75 can think up some little problem every 10,000 Kms

1999- Rover 75 2.5 V6 Celeste (Germany) .....Current and best car by far. It just has character plus.
1998- Lexus ES300 ( Australia) .....Super car, superb handling and cathedral quiet.
1989- Honda Accord ( Germany)......Nice small car, real workhorse.
1987- Holden GMH ( Australia)....... Typical Aussie family car.
1981- Rover SD1 SE 3500 V8 ( Australia)...... My first Rover and still running after nearly 28 years
1979- Ford Falcon ( Australia) ....... Typical tough Aussie all rounder
1966- Chevrolet Impala V8....... Cruising machine with astounding grunt and so much space.
1971- Triumph 2500 PI ( Australia).... Fantastic car, great pickup, fuel injection and so very fast for a standard saloon.
1968 -Triumph 2000 ( Australia).. My first real English car where I was inducted into the wood and leather club.
1967 Norton Commando...oops only 2 wheels but very nice.
1967 - Mini Moke - Mmmmmmm! fun to get about in summer but a bit too basic.
1964 - Holden GMH ( Australia).... My first car complete with two tone paint and lots of chrome.

As someone else said, it all started with Mecanno and Hornby someway back... mmmmmm. . I have driven quite a few different English American and German cars, they all have their charm but I can't go past a nice English style wood and leather interior. :drool4:

75,
I have probably missed some and these above are not in any particular order,
At the moment I still have 2 jags, 1 Jeep g Cherokee, and lastly my 75. Up till the last couple of years all were serviced and maintained by myself and over the years I have become a master bodger,(remember almost all of the above were mechanically driven and not like today's electronic/computerised modes) My toolkit was mainly a hammer and chisel. These days I still try to do bits and pieces and even have some "proper" tools and an OBD contraption.

Wow... an oldie revived.
Had a laugh when I looked at my list from three years ago and realised I can now add:

MG ZT 190+ 2.5 V6
Peugeot 407 Coupe GT
Jaguar XJ Sovereign TDVi
Land Rover Freelander 1.8 GSi
MG TF Spark 135

plus a new addition to come my way in the next three weeks or so (I think you'll like it ;) )

Cheers
Bluey

As an erstwhile General Manager with a large plc car retailer, I had the opportunity to have the use of many company cars, including (latterly) an Alfa Romeo 166 and a Peugeot 607. I took some staff to the Earls Court motorshow in 1997 where I saw the new 75. From that day to this, I knew I had to have one (alright, 8 actually!!). I was so impressed by the car's individuality I thought that this was the future of the British car makers. How wrong was I.

A list would be far too long.. :o

But the reason I bought my 75 was simple. I wanted another diesel auto, and the 75's are by far the best value for money around..

My cars in order of ownership...

1982 Datsun Cherry 1.2
1987 Vauxhall Belmont Jubilee 1.3
1989 Nissan Bluebird 1.6LS
1991 Ford Granada 2.0i Ghia
1992 Vauxhall Calibra 2.0i 8v
1989 Vauxhall Cavalier 1.8L
1994 Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0 LS
1998 Rover 620ti
1996 Rover 420 SLDi
2004 MG ZT+ CDTi 135

Final HP payment on the ZT is November, three years after purchase. Was considering a change until recently, but have now decided to stick with the ZT for at least another year.

The options which I was considering involved spending quite a lot more money... Jaguar XF, Mercedes CLS or BMW 335d. In the end I figured I wasn't getting anything much better than what I have now, but I would be paying out quite a lot for it. So instead I'm going to enjoy the ZT and having zero monthly payments for a while :}

Of course, if the right car comes along at the right price I may still be tempted...!

I have only been driving for 7 years but I think considering that relatively small amount of time my car ownership has been quite extensive.

1994 Fiat Cinqucento (brill little car - don't laugh)
1998 Fiat Seicento Sporting (again cracking little car written off when some numpy pizza delivery guy went into the back of it at 60mph)
1993 Vauxhall Frontera Sport (great fun but ever so expensive to run)
2007 Volkswagen Polo (company car)
2008 Mitsubishi Colt (Horrid - enough said company car)
1998 Vauxhall Vectra GLS 1.8 16v (a gift, and has to be said one of my favourite cars, until it refused to pass it's MOT on emmissions)
1999 Ford Mondeo LX (bargain @ £300)
1997 Vauxhall Astra Estate 1.6 8v (swapped the Mondeo for this  must have been nuts! Worst car ever!)
1993 Ford Escort (Awesome car - didn't like hills!)
1996 Renault Clio (or this could be the worst car ever?)
1997 Rover 218 is ("Rusty the rattling Rover" - Where others fail Rusty keeps going - my wifes car)
1997 Vauxhall Vectra Arctic (Went BANG doing 80 mph on the A1)
and last but by no means least:
2003 ROVER 75 CLUB SE (WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't say much more!!!)

:D:D:D:D:D
