:mad::mad::mad::mad:

My 87 year old Dad supposedly Bought a Car on Ebay ( very cheap.. so warning bells straight off for me ) and the deal was/is being done via this MOB ..linky.

(http://rav-corp.com/page/index.html) But now since he's paid up ( 3K  ) its all going to rats , he's had 3 promised delivery dates missed and no replies to querys .

Their UK Phone number is having "techinal problems" .

Oh no :( get onto paypal (did he use paypal?) and try and get payment reversed. Or whichever method he used to pay.

Just a snippet from trucknet HERE (http://www.trucknetuk.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=137794)

I really do hope he hasnt been scammed - but it looks like he may have - pity he did a bank transfer..

there are so many crooks out there now - trying to steal from everyone else.. it does my head in..

and on a different type of scamming - the emails they can send can look so valid that its easy to see why people can put details in as requested. my dad constantly rings me up asking about emails he has received..

anyway getting back to the point - I really do hope all works out, and your dad hasn't been scammed..

what has ebay said? Can they do anything if payment is via bank transfer? not sure? I expect not....

TomRS
23rd May 2016, 11:48
Its a straight scam... unfortunately as much as i dont want to say this, there is nothing you can do and i very much doubt you'll ever see that money again.

eBay cant do anything as it was done via bank transfer, the best thing to do would be to ring the banks "fraud protection line" and explain what has happened.
They may be able to reverse it, but only with 14 days... or something like that, any longer then you money really is lost :(

Sorry to tell you this is a scam that has been doing the rounds for years.

My brother in law was almost taken in. Lady advertised a car in Oxford, a nearly new Audi A3 for £5000. When he rang, she was joining her partner in South Africa and the car had been taken there by him.

She also offered the transport system to deliver the vehicle.

Fortunately he realised there was no car, no 'lady' and it was a scam.

I would very strongly suspect a scam - looking up that web domain gives me this .

As you can see nothing left to do to make the actual domain operator any more hidden. It will probably disappear fairly soon (the website) Once the word has been sufficiently circulated.

If he bought the car through Ebay (i.e. 'buy it now' ) then He may be able to get Ebay involved (but may not help much). But if he contacted as a classified ad then the purchase was made outside of Ebay. Was any part of the sum payed by Paypal, maybe as a deposit? If so then contact Paypal - you should be able to at least recover that.

As also said contact your (your father's) bank as well and see what they can do.

I'm sorry to hear this. It's worth reporting to eBay, even if they can't recover the funds so they are aware of this. Also contact the police. They may refer you to Action Fraud. The bank can investigate it and try and get the funds back but no guarantees. I hope there is a positive outcome. Please keep us updated.

It may be time for the OP to consider taking partial control of his fathers finances.

Perhaps a limit can be set of say £200, to leave him in control of the day to day stuff, and to make him feel that he still has some independance, but anything over this amount has to be authorised by the OP.

I don't know if this is possible, but it would be an avenue I'd investigate if I was in the same position.

Wise words. We had to do the same with my MiL - she used to keep about £300 in a tin in her kitchen cupboard. We had no idea until our kids told us because they had become concerned when Nan gave them their "Pocket Money". (She loved her Grandchildren).

When she died and we had to clear her house we found about 40 boxes of shoes - most never worn and there was only about 4 differing styles. It seems that despite our belief that she was mentally as bright as a button - she did have a bit of odd behaviour re buying stuff from Sunday Newspaper adds.

These days with the internet and "Silver Surfers" - some elderly people are very vulnerable to scammers and even simply "Repeat Purchase" of items that give them the pleasure of something to look forward to arriving in the post.

The original website has gone down, whether it's a result of Action Fraud getting involved or if they've realised the game is up ?? The nice gentleman who runs the domain that was cloned to make the company look legit has taken action with both the police and the domain hosts of the fake/cloned site. He has also asked me to post THIS (http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/forum/phpbb/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=18502).

Have you got the item number to hand ? obviously it wouldn't show your fathers details as bidders are anonymous on fleabay now, but these people usually just do a copy and paste so the format will be similar if not identical in any items they list.

What actually happened ..

Father saw a Mecedes C220 on Ebay @ a cheap price.

He Ebay messaged the Seller .. asking as its so cheap whats wrong with it..

The Auction almost immediately was pulled off Ebay and the Seller contacted my father with all the Bumf about, being out if the country , brother died leaving this car quick blah blah ..( all the standard bull-S) and was wanting to sell it via this Ravenna trading Corporation.

Father was sent photo's and asked to pay by Bank transfer to this Corp.. a so called Escrow company , and await delivery of the car , which was being held at the Revenna Warehouse .
And after delivery the buyer has 10 days to accept the purchase to get the funds released to the seller.
( or 10 day to make good an escape ;) ) ..
So far 2 delivery dates have been given and surprisingly :duh: not fulfilled ..

We have the Auction number but as it been pulled nothing is now available , we have a Ravenna transaction number which brings up details and a picture of the Merc with their track and trace link .
But their phone and contacts system doesn't work .
and the seller a [email protected] ([email protected]) doesn't seem to want to answer any emails :duh:.
Reported to Santander Fraud Department who are now getting onto trustees savings bank ..
A strange account for an American international Corp , i though .

that about it all up to date so far .

Chris

after a quite thorough look at the "company" in question and all the fake reviews about them, it appears they've been doing this for about a month (but may have done it in other years with the same trading name) it would appear that your dads case has spooked them as they have been getting a lot of attention and have either folded the original website or the police/action fraud have had it closed (unlikely) Looks like your best bet is to hope TSB take an altruistic view regarding the scamming of elderly people. You do however need to report it to the police/action fraud if you haven't done so already and get a crime number, as this is unfortunately a crime, TBH after the last 24 hours it became obvious that this is a total scam.

I know it's tempting to cling onto the idea that a company has some technical issues and all will be fine, however this mob have been pasting fake reviews on cloned fake websites around the world, which have nearly all suddenly disappeared, the "company" website has vanished (but it was listed on the fraudulent sites index before that happened)

Sorry

The car I mentioned in my earlier post was on Autotrader. It was the most gorgeous Audi A3 in sports trim, fantastic advert and loads of lovely pictures.

My Brother in law was actually at my house when he rang them.

The car was advertised as in Oxford but when he asked could he come to view he was told they were moving to South Africa and that her partner had already gone ahead and taken the car there.
But never mind she said, all you need to do is send a bank transfer and the car would be shipped to Hull where he could collect or have it couriered to his door.

Fortunately that's when the alarm bells started ringing. We reported the add to Autotrader who immediately took it down.

I feel so sorry for your Dad. Not necessarily his age, anyone off guard can be taken in by these slime balls.

Unless they have a good reputation of course.
We still sell & receive funds for cars unseen by the buyer.
Fortunately they are pleasantly surprised when they turn up to collect.
BUT we have always spoken on the phone at some point in the transaction.

And vice versa I still buy cars unseen after some research BUT always talk to the seller first.

How did things turn out? I'm hoping your dad got his money back?

I asked a question on eBay last night about a car I'm interested in & recieced a reply today direct to my email & not via eBay messages.
It looked as though it came from eBay but I never received a notification so I signed in and double checked sure enough no eBay message.

Here's a copy of there reply.

Hi, First of all I want to thank you for your interest in my car. I don't know much about cars but this was my borther's car who recently passed away so I know it has always been properly maintained.
The car is in excellent condition, immaculate inside and out it looks, feels and drives like new, 36,320 miles, no damage, no accidents, no scratches, garage kept, non-smoker, Full Clear HPi report, 2 keys, V5, logbook, service book and all handbooks.
The interior is also in perfect shape. The engine is also in great condition, no problem with it. The vehicle comes with Full documentation and Full Service History, 12 months MOT
The car is in UK, I moved out of the country when I found my other half but this is not a problem for me as far as the transaction is concerned because I was selling the car through RTC anyway.
I believe you know what RTC is if you buy and sell online often, if you don't I'll be glad to walk you through the process, let me know if you are still interested so I can get back to you with additional details.

I smelled a rat right away so when I got in from work I contacted eBay who to be honest weren't all that helpful they seemed to think it was a spoof email which I said I didn't think it was as it was a direct reply via email to me & included pics of the car.
I reported the email to eBay & asked why it came direct to my email address & not via eBay messages, they don't know said your email isnt visible unless you've had transactions with the seller before which I hadn't.

So be careful out there I'll be swapping out my email address on all my accounts to a new one.
