The weather is really horrible today but I did a few test shots with my new gear. Below is a quick snap out the door of a sparrow on the bird feeder and below that is a crop of the same photo.
I shot it at ISO 400. I am really pleased at how much detail and how little noise is in the image (even at higher ISOs than 400). This bodes well for when I get to take some insect shots or maybe horses over jumps. I will be able to shoot at high shutter speeds even in poor light and can crop in whilst retaining detail.:icon_lol: https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4592/...5597ce43_b.jpg Test by Paul Stickley, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4731/...c57ce0eb_b.jpg Test crop by Paul Stickley, on Flickr |

I got my new macro lens today - a 90mm f2.8
I'll use it mostly for insects - not much use this time of year. It does well as a portrait lens also. Here are a few test shots - most are cropped and were only test shots for the new lens. It does show the good resolution and detail of the lens and camera. Roll on summer. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4725/...35cfa201_b.jpg DSC00443.jpg by Paul Stickley, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4633/...b4bd330f_b.jpg DSC00436.jpg by Paul Stickley, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4600/...bab49049_b.jpg DSC00425.jpg by Paul Stickley, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4638/...3c5c6d4e_b.jpg DSC00406.jpg by Paul Stickley, on Flickr |
I went for a walk on a local common today. Nice to see the sun for a change.

Rotten weather down here again so I played with my new gear inside and tested a few things out.
I used 90mm macro lens Tripod Camera tethered to PC with USB 3 and new free Sony software 2 Flashes. I will use all this when the weather is better for photographing insects, birds etc. so it is good for me to test it all out. Here are some shots of coins (yawn). Each shot has a cropped version which is still 1920 pixels (approx) along the long edge so it will still look good on a monitor. The shots are of reduced size to display here but clicking on them will go to Flickr where they can be viewed at many sizes. I am pleased with the picture quality. The tethering works well. My Nissin and Yongnuo flash work great. All looks good - yay. If anyone is wondering why the silver colour on the coins looks black it is due to the lighting. I have had this problem in the past and found lighting from overhead seems to work better - but these were only test shots so I was not so bothered. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4645/...8ababb8990.jpg https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4636/...0746703543.jpg https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4646/...5f3757ee41.jpg https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4644/...e73bdbf74d.jpg https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4731/...60574f2c7f.jpg https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4636/...f9d883832d.jpg https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4634/...9da831d856.jpg https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4638/...dc11b218db.jpg https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4693/...ea5902ae1f.jpg https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4640/...4e4ddbfba2.jpg |
Moon looked full tonight so I ventured out with my tripod and took a few at various shutter speed and at f8. I turned off stabilisation.
I am not sure they are any better than the one above I took a few days ago hand holding. I think hand holding you get a few more unsharp ones. I think the non full shot looks better as the craters are more obvious. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4638/...c866e007_b.jpg DSC00885.jpg by Paul Stickley, on Flickr |
I went for a walk today and took a few pics of a local pond. It was a bit dull and I thought water reflections might be a good choice for a dull day.
