MG/ ROVER 2DIN Unit Install & Other things

I have started this tread, as the posting on the ICE forum was getting a bit messy.

I will be doing a "How To" once another member receives his head unit and I help him on the install and adding things to the SAT NAV program ECT.

tony_fry 9th June 2010 16:39

I am being asked by a few members for help on things with these head units.

I am thinking about doing a Micro Card, with the latest IGO8 program along with Speed Cams, Full voice instructions, other skins ECT ECT.

I have been eBaying and can buy a 8Gb Kingston Micro card for around £18.00 or a 4Gb for around £7.00

I could load All of Europe (Around 2Gb) on the 8Gb card
I could load U.K and Ireland (Around 200Mb) on the 4Gb Card

This will leave plenty additional memory for Music Files to be added at a later date.

Or you could always send me a Micro card and I will load the software for you, again with return postage as I would send it back on a "signed for" 1st class post.

I do not expect anything for doing it, but all I would ask is, if the return postage to be paid.

The software would be for "elevation purposes" if you like the program than you can purchase it from Nav-N-Go.

This services is only available to members who have brought the New Units from either Sean or Cathy as there are many different screen resolutions for this type of unit, and I can only test them on my one, before I send them out.

If anyone would like any further information please feel free to PM me.

Revised price from the link Paul have given me

4Gb £8.77
8Gb £15.33
Plus say an extra £2.50 for P&P (signed for 1st class postage)

2nd Revsion

I will also include a ROVER 75/ ZT car Icon (it's my car, sorry its a black 75 ) on the map screen and a Rover 75/ ZT Opening Splash Screen
BUT you will have to let me know, what you would prefer for the splash screen

Tony I would definatly be intrested in one of these, and will PM you when I receive my unit.

On another note check http://www.memorybits.co.uk/index.ph...filter_id=202/ for micro sd, Free shipping and cheaper, takes a couple of days because they are located in Jersey think. I always get my card from them and have never had a problem.

stux99 9th June 2010 16:54

You are the man Tony.
4gb card sounds good to me.:D
PM on way

Hi Paul,

Your right, they do seem cheaper, perhaps I will use them it will bring the cost down.

sjr 10th June 2010 19:44

Hi Tony,

I have installed the unit and all seems OK so far. But I now need to install the Sean supplied DVB-T. I assume that the - & + for this can be safely taken from the - & + on the ISO connector for the head unit? If so should I use the switched live?

I have loads more questions, but I need to compile them:D

Thanks in advance,

SJR

Hi SJR

I do not have Sean's DVT-B unit but from the wiring diagram that another member sent me, the wiring should be:-

The Yellow Wire is a 12volt constant feed.

The Red wire is Switched 12volt supply.

The Black Wire is the ground (Earth Wire)

The Green wire should go to Earth if you don’t earth this wire you will not be able to use the DVB-T unit, it is normally connected to the Handbrake, so you can only watch the TV whist stationary.

All the connections can be taken from the ISO connector .

These should be the only wires you would need. Apart from the RCA connections, which are simple.

tony_fry 11th June 2010 17:21

I have now send out my 1st SD card to lathbury (John) he has installed it and here is his reply:-

"Hi Tony, The card arrived yesterday and I have installed it, it is great. Many thanks for all your help, I look forward to your "how to" on some of the other great features. Once again, many thanks, I would have been lost without your help. John."

So one down only another 6 to do :o

tony_fry 14th June 2010 14:22

You can choose the 75 or the MG splash screen that replaces the IGO opening screen when you first go into the SAT NAV program.

What type of radio/satnavs do these cards fit

thanks Allan

Muck 14th June 2010 19:40

Hi Tony,
some questions to your offer:
My program version is 8.3.2.71348 from Jan 7th 09
Most of the maps are numbered 09.02.1
If yours are newer - I'm very interested because in August we'll spend some time in England's south with caravan.
The full voice instruction is only english version or several languages - maybe german?
I'm thinking about changing the position arrow with a little Rover. Do you know whether anybody has done this - it doesn't make sense doing same work twice...

Hello Alan

These cards will only work in the new MG/ Rover unit, as other units can be a different screen resolution our units are 800x480 if yours is the same then you can use the SD card.

Hello Muck

The IGO8 is version 8.34.117940 November 2009 (which I believe is the latest version)

The Map of the U.K is 100312 dated December 2009 by Tele Atlas (Again the latest). I would also put the latest European Maps on the 8Gb card.

I only have TTS (Test to Speech) in English, I could add German, but I am not sure if it is correct as I do not speak German.

I already have done the mod so the arrow is replaced with a 75 (mine in black) which will be done on the SD card also it will have either a 75 or ZT start up splash screen.

Please feel free to ask any further questions.

Dam you are so good Graham, I did not know there is a later patch, I will have to have a look.

Now all I need is my replacement GPS Module and to find someone that is good with a soldering iron.

Tony, the patch just has a few bug fixes, nothing drastic but the desktop wallpaper stays on now (think he's used stronger wallpaper paste)If you get the same board I did you will be able to solder it yourself (you've already had some practice)

Thanks to Sean for the quick service, didn't even know he had ordered it but a DHL van pulled up outside the house yesterday with my parcel :D.
Wonder what i can do to break it next???

Arr I already have that Patch, it was me that pointed the wallpaper problem to Petrut, I know he is working on a new desktop Iphone look alike , I thought he had done it and not let me know :}.

I am worried about doing the soldering, it has just cost me £70.00 for the GPS Board. I don't want to mess up another one

Please let me know how you do prefer to get paid and how much it is to Germany.

I have now sent out 7 lots of the "Updated" IGO8 SD micro cards to various members, and would like some feed back please on the updates.

lasor 18th June 2010 09:48

Hi Tony

Just a quick check, I am guessing the all will fit quite easily on a a 4 gig card including maps for all europe and space for updates POI,s ect.

I will keep the one card for just Sat Nav and have a seperate card for my music, which I already have ready and waiting..

I intend to have one of these of you when I get my unit, which is currently in transit.

Cheers

Ajd1 18th June 2010 14:12

Hi Tony,

My card arrived this morning thanks.

Unfortunately I think my unit is becoming faulty, getting some very loud cracks through the right front speaker whenever you touch the screen or when the sat nav speaks.

When I put the card in I get the dreaded out of memory box as soon as it starts up locking the system and kicking me back to the screen where you start the navigation from.

I'm even getting the same from my original card that was working up until recently.

I bought mine direct from Cathy before Sean came along so don't hold much hope out for getting anything done about it.

I appreciate your effort and expertise in putting these cards together for us all.

I'm sure it would have been better if the unit was working properly.

Thanks again and I'm sorry I couldn't be more positive about it.

Muck 18th June 2010 18:58

Hi,
does anybody know, wether the complete navigation runs from sd card, or is any part of the program on flash inside?
Background is, that some parts of user interfaces are translated very strange, so I'd like to change it by myself...
Second question is: has anybody tried to connect a pc to the unit?

I have a ELM usb OBD2 box, possibility of connecting direct though usb mod spoken of earlier?

Andy I will PM you about the card, you can set it up with another skin.

No and again I get the out of memory message, but 9 times out of 10 it is fine.

Re the cracking, have you double checked the wiring? I suggest you remove the units wiring at the back and re-connect it.

Muck,

The navigation program runs directly from the SD card.

You could connect a PC to the unit with the GPS module MOD, by adding a USB port and you would need Petrut WINCE Patch.

Another happy "customer"

Hello Tony

I tried the card out and it works brilliant
it's different layout i will have to play abit, the voice commands of the welsh streets
are taking the proverbial no-where near and it spells cwmafan not pounces it
going to take a while to get use to hear him talking rubbish it is funny tho.

thank you Tony for making the card it makes this 2din unit worthwhile any ideas about
the tmc is that easy to add to our units?
i read it somewhere it might be you that posted it?

Hi Guys,

I might be doing something wrong, but when i have the radio or any other input on (disc, SD, etc) the sat nav will cut the sound out and usually advise of an up comming speed camera/you are over the speed limit! etc.
This is fine when i am using the sat nav but it will do it even when i dont use it.
When i shut it down from the IGO8 menu it stops cutting across, but every time i turn the stereo on it i get the sat nav voice advising me about stuff when in non sat nav mode.

Anybody know how to automatically keep the sat nav sound off when not using it?

If you go into the setting menu (spanner) and then into setuo up un-tick the automatic start up, it will not start when you turn the unit on, but you will manually turn it on, OR you can mute the sound on IGO so you do not hear anything from it.

Hi,
few days ago I bought Tony's SDCard. He was very helpful and it lasts only 2 days that the card was here in Germany. Now I have tested all the things, I received with the sd card. First of all, it's a fantastic skin and and very easy to install; even the Rover Icon that shows the way you have to take. I also included a German language file, so I have now the menu in German. The TTS works fine in German.
So guys don't hesitate... it's great.
Later on I'll take some pictures and post it in our German Forum as well.

Once again Tony thanks to you and next step is having my own 75 as an icon...

Tony,

I can't seem to get the speed cameras working on the set up that Sean sent me with the double din unit. I assume that it just doesn't have speed cameras set up on the micro SD card?

Do you just take out the card in the sat nav slot and put your one in its place. And then you are ready to go?

Also what is a skin?

Could I then use the old card to put music onto?

Thanks in advance,

SJR

Thanks in advance,

SJR

Speed cams are not supplied on the card from Sean, I can send you the current speed cams but they will only bleep at you, with my card it will tell you what the camera is.

Yes it's just a matter of swapping the card over.

How do you make it do that? Is it just a case of saving the image somewhere and renaming it?

TTS and TMC

Hi Tony,

Great site!

I have been trying to get TTS to work using UK Kate, but get silence, so I'm either doing something wrong or she's really annoyed with me!
Any chance of a brief how to and a link to the files that work?

Also is the built-in TMC on these units a dead end? Obviously IGO can't detect it, does anything else? Does it show up on a port list?

Thanks
Adrian

Muck 26th June 2010 20:54

Hi Tony,
could you please ask your "Softie", how he gets the background of your car transparent?
Normaly .bmp files don't allow this.

Hi David the bmp files have to be added to the branding.zip file in the right screen size I.E on our units 800x480

Hi Graham

Yes the new board arrived on Friday, it was sent to Chrissyboy and I collected it yesterday, I am still looking for someone to do the USB MOD for me, I don't want to waste another £70

Hi Adrian

You have to have all the right files that go with the TTS voices, do you have any working TTS voices working?

I have received a TMC receiver from Sean (Radioguy) that I will be putting to the test to see if I can get the TMC running on our units.

Hi Muck

I will speak to our IT man tomorrow to see what he done to get rid of the background, I know it was some to do with RGB, but what he done I do not know right now.

Muck 27th June 2010 20:57

Hi Tony,
I have solved the "problem"... You have to save the bmp file with the alpha channel - then it works. So I have now my own 75 as position arrow on screen.
I' ve read that you received an external tmc from Sean. This is shurely a possibility - but what do you think about trying to get a gps board with an integrated tmc like some of the older units have. The pinout seems to be the same because the usb mod is on the same pins of both boards. So if it's possible to get an exactly description...
I am a friend of integrated solutions.
And next thing to do is a phonebook function. So let's go to work:D

Hi Muck

It would be nice to get a GPS board with the TMC module already installed, but I can not find anything about them in the UK, perhaps that could be your task!!! to find the right board

Muck 28th June 2010 18:46

Hi Tony,
in the other thread post No 473 and 475 you can see that there are 2 different boards. The one from picky747 shows the same as mine, I think, and this one has no tmc, if picky can confirm this - the other must be the one with tmc. Then it's up to Sean's contact in China to find out what is the name of this board with royaltek chipset.

Regards

Muck

PS: Do you meanwhile have an answer from petrut about phonebook?

Tony,

That looks great, but I am not sure about having the car on the screen. Would I be able to swap between the arrow and the car? Or is it something that you need to do before you send out the SD card?
If it is not easily changed by me, then could I just have the arrow.

Cheers,

Did you want the Manual ?

picky747 29th June 2010 22:29

Found another forum for suzuki owners and they have a chinese unit with the same interface as ours.Interestingly one owner has got OBD software to work on it.

There are a couple of vids on you tube showing how the units operate normally if anyone has not seen one yet.

Qucik question, possibly for Tony.:)

I went into the audio settings of my unit as my card volume seems to be lower than all the other modes, however I dont see a volume setting for the card mode, well at least I dont think there is one there? Also while I was in the settings I noticed a tab for "Other" but when I select that all I get is a keypad and title password. Does this mean I can set a passord for the unit and if so what are the benefits, or does it mean when I enter a password I will get other options? (if so what are they? and whats the password?)

Thanks

The Other tab has no user settings as such,it's just for factory setup. To access it just type in 126 in the password box.

Hi John

You can got into the other volumes and adjust them from the settings screen

Sytem Setup

Audio

But they don't seem to do very much, you have volume options for each mode I.E GPS, Radio, CCD, SD Card ECT, but they don't seem to do much as far as I can see, but give it a try

Hi Graham

Yes I have got the GPS module and have now done the USB mod myself, and it works this time :}

Also I have done the IPod mod, so the unit now charges the IPod whilst I use it, so I don't have to take it out everyday and charge it any more :}:}:}, BUT it will only charge the Ipod, it will not charge the Iphone for some strange reason, I still can not get the TMC USB receiver to work with the unit, I had emailed Petrut and he said "unless you have driver for the it won't work (but there is not a driver for WINCE or the Royaltek RTA-3000)that I can find, he said the other problem might be the power supply, but I have a separate plug-in USB and power take off unit.

There has been some talk on Petruts forum about the OBDC stuff. Now that would be a great addition to the unit.

picky747 2nd July 2010 10:45

Here are pics of the mod to enable iPod chaging on this head unit.

I discussed with Sean as to why such a simple link was not put in at the factory and he was informed that they were concerned about the iPod/iPhone being damaged. As the mains charger outputs 13V for the firewire input on the iPod, I didn't really see how any issue arise with this as the car voltage should peak @ 13.8V approx.

All you need to do is put in the link as shown in the pics below. Its really easy and much simpler than the GPS mod. I suggest using solid core wire for the link, such as a core from a cat5 cable.

I have tested it for a few hours on the bench and neither the iPod or head unit suffered any ill effects. Just be careful to check your work afterwards for any shorts, stray solder etc etc.

Tony also has it done and he has probably used it for longer than me as I have not fully fitted my unit yet due to the poor radio reception that I am experiencing. My 2g iPhone does charge whilst Tony's 3G (with OS4) does not
for some reason.

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT YOU WILL PROBABLY INVALIDATE YOUR WARRANTY IF YOU DO THIS AND EXPERIENCE ANY SUBSEQUENT PROBLEMS. DON'T BLAME ME IF YOUR HEAD UNIT OR VEHICLE SPONTANEOUSLY COMBUST:D

Petrutms on here is doing a patch you can download that gives you the WinCe desktop with new media players that work fine. You can read about it HERE.The cost is about £7 depending on exchange rates ,but it's well worth it especially if you do the USB mod so you can attach a hard drive full of movies and music.

I could possible trace the wires from the iPod lead to the board when I have the headunit out of the car again. It'll be in a few weeks time, though.

Tony,
With IGO8 I notice when it gives an instruction, it continues to mute the radio for about 5 to 10 seconds after the instruction is complete. Does yours do that?
TomTom does not have the same pause (it has other isues like voiceclipping which make it unusable), so I assume it is a problem with my IGO8 install rather than the unit itself?
Idealy I would prefer to have the radio not mute at all (or very slightly) but I realise this is not possible.

Thanks
Adrian

Hi Adrian, your unit is operating as it should but it should only be a few seconds between the voice command and then returning back to the radio, seems like every sat nav program has it's drawbacks.

The postcode should be entered in the 2nd line IE where the town shows but remember there should be a gap between the postcodes IE BR6 then a space 2DP

I am actually looking at getting a different unit - but it has the same resolution.

What I would like to know is does Igo8 support TMC??

Am willing to give the latest version another try. I had an early version of Igo8 previously and didn't really get on with it, but that was partly due to the Toshiba TG01 it was on - which refused to play the sound and kept crashing.

Thanks

Hi Chris, yes IGO does support TMC, providing your unit has a TMC receiver built into it, I had it working great on my previous unit, but you do need the right licences in IGO.

Hi Chris, I am sure sure what the licence the original unit comes with, but there are many sites that you can pull of the data. I can do a card for you with the latest software version 8.34, the original unit only comes with 8.00.

PM me if you want any any more info.

I suspect, as you have stated, that it will come with a very out of date version of Igo 8.

I was just scanning through the thread and came across the above and I might be able to help with the solution....

My car had an Ipod interface fitted already, it worked but would not charge the new Ipod Touch I bought a few weeks ago - it charged any older units I tested it with. What I eventually managed to work out, was that Apple use a different pin on the newer Ipods to provide the charge input. So you now need an adaptor between cradle and Ipod, in order to get it to charge. Look up 'Scosche passPORT Charging Adapter for iPhone'.

I would be VERY careful playing about with the WinCe you COULD fry (no pun intended) the GPS Board and the main board, the safest way is with Patrut's patch, it can always be un-installed.

well until you have a foolproof method of restoring it all!!! ;)

TV Aerial

Hi Guys

I have the 2 din unit with the TV box and wireless camera. Everything seems to be working okay except for the TV. It doesn't seem to be able to detect any channels. I assume the aerial is pants. I seem to remember someone on here had one sitting on the back parcel shelf. I have scrolled through both extensive threads but can't find the post.

Can anyone recommend a descent quality Aeriel please? And where it should be positioned?

Thanks

Edd

lathbury 26th July 2010 15:08

Dbb/t.

I have the same problem as you Mr Edd, I have the Chinese h/u and it is working fine. BigRuss wired the freeview box for me yesterday and after some problems with the aerials we eventually got it working with the two supplied aerial, we watched part of the Sunday musical and had loads of channels. Now I can get no channels. The i/r sensor lights green and I get the initial tv screen, I get the installation page and the channell search page but it won't go any further than that. Is this an aerial problem as we used the one from Capese which worked initially. When I go to the h/u homepage "tv" lights up briefly but not "gps" and then "tv" goes out and "gps" lights up.

Hi John

On my unit I had to go to AUX on the main to watch the TV, the TV should be greyed out on your H.U

lathbury 26th July 2010 15:31

Tv.

Hi Tony, I use the Aux screen but the tuner won't pick up any channels and won't go past the installation page. It was working great yesterday when Russ fitted it. John.

Hi Tony, I have an Erising ES907D with a screen resolution of 800 x 480. IGO8 version supplied is 8.3.2.93112, June 2009, with UK maps 2008.Q3.

Would you be able to supply me with an updated version on a 4 GIG card along with ZT/75 Icon and ZT splashscreen. Is installation merely a question of inserting the SD card, or is anything else involved? (not very bright on these things).

Derrick

P.S. I meant European Maps on SD card, as I don't need the card for music etc.

I only got the one TV aerial for the TV box so what do you mean by having two? I also got one for the GPS but had no issues with that. I put it on the top of the dash under the licence disc with the cable running through the joint in between the pillar and the dash then down behind the glove box and into the unit. It seems to work very well with a very strong signal from the satellites.

The TV aerial I put on the back parcel shelf with no joy. I have since tried it in a variety of places, even on the roof on top of a hill that I know has strong TV signals but the TV box still reports 0% signal.

I can scroll through all the options in the TV box but I never get any channels. I assume it is the aerial that is the issue. Can anyone recommend a good quality one?

Also someone has suggested that when I do get a good one to put it inside the brake light fitting on the rear windscreen. Any thoughts on that too please.

Thanks

Edd

My car had an Ipod interface fitted already, it worked but would not charge the new Ipod Touch I bought a few weeks ago - it charged any older units I tested it with. What I eventually managed to work out, was that Apple use a different pin on the newer Ipods to provide the charge input. So you now need an adaptor between cradle and Ipod, in order to get it to charge. Look up 'Scosche passPORT Charging Adapter for iPhone'.

Yes ive read this before also about the new ipods/iphones. Naughty apple, getting more money outta people!

We used the aerial from Capese and it worked great then the signal broke up so Russ used the two aerials supplied with the unit but then the signal broke up. Capese's aerial is the better aerial so perhaps the fault lies elsewhere.

Sorry completly new to this... What are and where do I get info about these Capese aerials?

I am looking at a few on eBay that range between £7 and £30. But there is no name with them. I can't find Capese on Google.

Dvb/t.

I had my freeview box installed by Big Russ and have been having reception problems ever since. I tried to get it working yesterday with no luck. Today I can get a broken signal. When we fitted the two supplied aerials the signal was very patchy and I notice that they have a red light on them but only one was lit, is the other aerial u/s?. John.

ceedy 29th July 2010 13:05

Well even though my unit is slight kaput at the moment.
the TV bit is till going!!

With a Capase type aerial I can a better signal than the supplied one..

Still not perfect as our local signal is not good ... but definately better.

But I don't think we should expect a perfect picture if you are in an area where the signal is poor! :getmecoat:

update re DAB Radio

Hi All

Well, I have been proven WRONG. But in a good way. Tony_Fry today installed a unit with the DVB-T (freeview) receiver and informs me that the DAB radio works well also with it. I previously had said it would not work. Today he informed me that when they tested with the TV/RADIO button on the remote they received lots of DAB Channels. He cautioned me also that this will be signal dependent. So I guess that if you are currently receiving strong DAB Signals then the DVB-T receiver will access them as well !

Thanks a Million Tony, You are worth your weight in gold !

Radioguy 31st July 2010 15:18

Re Tony Frys SD Cards

Many of you have sung the praises of Tony's SD Cards with the Nav Program and the POI's and Speed Cams with the most updated maps. Today Tony and I spoke and we both felt that it would be a good idea to provide HIS maps and his POI's etc directly from the factory. For those that are interested of course.

Currently the 4 GB SD Cards are about 12£ including postage and 18£ including postage for the 8 GB Cards.

We will be offering them for 10£ and 15£ respectively which is a savings for you, easier for Tony and allows me to add the features to my offerings.

So in the interests of all involved, we can now offer these cards to be shipped with any new units ordered. If you are ordering for an existing unit, best to contact Tony directly.

For those of you with booked orders, I will place it on the website in a manner that you can pay the additional to have it included with your units.

Thanks again Tony !

Well the other one arrived this morning and I fitted it... Nada no signal. So I connected it to the aerial on the roof of my house and got all the channels. So I tried the unit from Radioguy and it also got some signals. but not as many.

I have tried about 4 different car aerials and driving around and nada. So it looks like it is an aerial issue. I don't understand it cos I live on the top of a hill overlooking the town with line of sight to the mast and have no problems getting all the channels with a dodgy house aerial.

Someone on here called Capese or something is selling aerials that most say are working fine. Perhaps Radioguy should get a contract with him to supply them. So I will try one of his next. Starting to get expensive with these ****** things. I really want it for the digital radio channels.

Anyone want to buy a good working DVT-B box without an aerial?

I am still having issues getting the steering wheel paddles working. It tells me to enter 168 but doesn't tell me where to enter it. The manual says press the Aux in the system setup but I'll be blow-ed if I can find where Aux is located. I found one section in the "Other" tab but every time I try to do anything in there I get Invalid Password messages.

I must say I am impressed with the Radio sound and the DVD and CD music. The Blue tooth phone is brilliant and I have had no problems with the reversing camera. Just this ****** TV signal thingy-me-bob. The SatNav is okay although I am still learning how iGo8 works after TomTom. I eventually found where I could turn the sound down without it blaring my ears off every time I started her up. The neighbors were beginning to get fed up. Why do they set it so loud at the manufacturers? They must all be deaf or something.

Becoming a pain in the butt.

I am open to any suggestions on how to get them to work.

EDD and Bernard, Tony Fry installed one this past weekend, The same Thing but worked perfectly including DAB radio. Something is wrong.
Edd you mentioned about being in the real window, Bernard are you in the same location ? Sometimes Windscreens have thermal qualities that Block signals. We don't recommend for example the GPS Antenna be too close to the windshield. Some Do and Some Don't have this.

Have either of you tried the signal with antenna OUTSIDE the car?

I only have mine temporarily mounted on passenger side front top windscreen just to get everything up and running. It worked pretty well for two days and now it looks likely that the amplifier may have failed or hopefully maybe the in-line fuse blown. I was running FM radio from it until I get round to extending from the boot.

I've got aircon problems developed today so that is the urgent thing to look at, the aerial will have to wait.

I have tried mine everywhere. In the car outside the car on the roof on the bonnet.

They only way I can get both DVB-T units to work is with my house aerial.

I have tried 4 different DVT-B aerials with no joy. I get very good reception with my house Aeriel.

I am wondering if it is the signal amplifier that is packing up. I know it is getting power as I have wired the power source from the same connection as the DVB-T unit and the Reversing Camera Receiver. (See my "How To" on installing that device. Click Me So it isn't a fuse.

But I can't keep buying these boosted aerials at £25 a pot and then they pack in after two days.

I cant work out where you've got that stuck. Is it on top of the high level brake light housing? I'm confused as part of the aerial seems hidden behind the black surround.

Where I stuck mine was in clear view part of the rear windscreen, none of it was shielded by black paper and also it was clear on both sides of the aeriel. I noticed that the signal weakened when I pit my hand in front of it on the inside of the car so I think they pick up signals from both directions. If you've got that stuck on the brake light area then I assume that at least one side of it is not clear view.

They are very directional and you will need to move the car around a bit to get a decent signal.

If you want any quality at all while on the move you would need a DVB box with two aerial inputs at least, and even then they are not perfect. Dont forget that you are trying to compare the performance from an arial about 6 inches long with your house ariel, perfectly aligned, permanently fixed, and 6 feet long.

tony_fry 3rd August 2010 07:48

Re the DVB-T units, I have tried several and Sean's one seems to be on par with any of the other makes. I have also been along the route of different antennas, and have spent a small fortune on them, and they all seems as bad as each other.

Location does make a BIG difference, I leave near Crystal Palace in South East London and 95% of the time, I get a perfect picture, apart from when I am going down the A2 out of London.

I have been toying with the idea of getting one of these units:-

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

But again the unit is only as good as the signal it receives.

It is inside the rear brake light housing. I put it there because someone on here said that was what they did. I fitted it there after I had tried just about every place else on the car and in every location around my town (Rural Shropshire)

As for it being covered by the black surround... I think it is the angle of the photo as if I look straight down the whole thing is visible.

As I have already said I think it maybe the booster or amplifier that could be the issue. Some one else said they had one of these working for a couple of days and then it stopped working.

Is it possible to test if the amp is working and how?

Edd

Just tried to PM you but it says

Mr Edd has chosen not to receive private messages or may not be allowed to receive private messages. Therefore you may not send your message to him/her.

If you are trying to send this message to multiple recipients, remove Mr Edd from the recipient list and send the message again.

Maybe there is something wrong with forums system, I don't know where the buddy's list is, I haven't changed anything

That is interesting. As far as I know I haven't stopped anything from being received or sent. I guess there must be a setting in my profile that limits this... Mind you I have had messages from the Moderators recently about my "How to" that I posted. So I know PMing me works.

Perhaps I have sent to many.

One wonders about these gremlins at how vicious they get. A ghost in the machine.

Just checked my profile and all the appropriate boxes are checked or unchecked correctly.

Careful, Edd. You will become paranoid, everything seems out to get you at the moment. ;)

My thanks also to Tony for invaluable help with this unit.
