how do i replace an ignition key

Hi, I am the proud owner of a 2000 Rover 75. Unfortunately I have lost the spare ignition key. I went to a specialist locksmith who told me that the technology for the key is BMW and they wouldnt be able to make me another one. Any advice as to how I can get a replacement as I am now guarding my remaining key like a child!

A new key will cost somewhere between £140 and £180 as it needs to be ordered from Germany and then needs a T4 session to code it to your car.

I think there are some members on here who can help with obtaining one and coding it.

Where in the country are you located?

Derek

Best of British are relatively cheap but not worth the effort if you're not within driving distance of Darlaston (West Mids).

Hi thanks for this info. I live near Stoke-on-Trent so it would be ok to take the car to darlaston especially as my son lives in Birmingham. Can you tell me who this Best of British is? Thanks a lot - Paul.

There are 3 parts to a key. The blade, The circuit board and the ECU chip.

The blade can be replaced cheaply <£10
The circuit board has a unique number normally in the form of a barcode. If you have the barcode you can reprogram the board to other cars. Or replacements can be had for <£50

The chip is the problem. This is the bit that costs a load of money as they are unique to the car.

You can swap circuit boards and reprogram the car to accept them but you still need a chip to start the car.

Do they supply keys, or just program?

I got the key from them Duncan. Took, I think, 3 weeks, and the programming took 15 minutes.
