2nd photo is indeed the Scott Monument on Princess Street. Climbing to the top is a nightmare as the spiral stone steps get so narrow at the top you feel if you slipped you would tumble all the way down.

Calton Hill and its monuments. The castellated structure is the Governor's House of the Old Calton Jail, next to the government offices of St. Andrew's House
