Fan problems disgnosis
Hi,
I've just purchased a 51 plate 180 ZT+. According to the build data kindly supplied by Reebs, the car is apparently the first ZT 180 Sports Auto to be assembled. The car is great however there are a couple of things which I need to sort out though, the first of which is the cooling fan. It would appear that my cooling fan doesn't work - at all! I have done the following tests but want to double check I've done all the diagnosis I can before buying a replacement fan. I have:
Is there anything else which could be preventing the fan from working - or is it definitely replacement fan time? Are there any more fuses or relays I should be checking? I believe that I have the older 2 speed fan which doesn't have a resistor visible when looking through the grill. Any advice gratefully received :) Tom |
A 51 V6 came with the 3-speed fan system. Sounds like you need to replace it. Or maybe attempt to re-brush it. That depends on your DIY skill and your luck.

Thanks for the response - so does it sound like I've checked everything I can to diagnose a faulty motor?
What is the best unit to replace it with so it doesn't happen again? The car has only covered 65000 miles so I'm a bit surprised it's failed on both it's speeds already. Thanks, Tom |
That's excactly the mileage they fail I'm afraid.
Many members ask me what the best option is: The shop links below may help. Both options in stock & both will outlast the original motor! Just depends if you want to stick to original (PGJ) design or aftermarket . PGJ is quicker to fit and comes with new relay control box but uses your old blade. 12 month Guarantee. Kenlowe conversion kit comes with new blades but assumes your control box is working ok. 2 year g/tee (used control boxes stocked also) Rover PGJ Fan with fitted uprated resistor kit http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...ad.php?t=68337 Kenlowe conversion kit http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...ad.php?t=68338 Other items I always stock you may need while front is off: Petrol versions Shannon tube. Diesel owners; Viton intercooler seals PCV Crankcase filter. Any engine variant: Condenser (check for corroded fins very common) Whole shop here http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...splay.php?f=74 Condenser Air conditioning http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...ad.php?t=68340 |
Thanks for the detailed reply - looks like I'll be doing some shopping!
Are the control boxes known to fail and is this something I can check before stripping the car down? |
There's only a couple of relays in the box which I stock anyway.
Very seldom do they fail but no problem to add them to your order for piece of mind. Jules |
