Testing for switched live?
 

Morning all I've just been reading over some old threads re DD install and noticed someone else has had a power issue from the same wire I've tried to tap into. I have borrowed a multi metre can someone advise me how to test please I know where to put the red and black terminal testers but what settings is it AC or DC and set at 20v or what thanks in advance Tim:bowdown:

Cars/ car batteries, car wiring and HGV - are always DC.

House mains etc. always AC

You set the AC/DC setting to what ever you would expect, then choose the voltage range, but always set that to a higher setting than you would expect.

For working on a car DC 12v you would probably use the 20v range, 20v being the maximum. For 24v HGV you would use the 50v range.

When testing your home wiring, you would use AC and a voltage range greater than 240v.

To check a car fuse, a lamp etc. you would use a resistance range, though some meters have a continuity setting which will buzz if a fuse is good.

Make sure you never put the meter across any voltage with it set to a resistance range or a current range, because the meter is likely to release the magic smoke.
