Hi Matt great how to thanks for that ;)

You said in your post :-

"The new thermostat (PEL100570L) went in past the rigid pipe with a lot of manoevering, and now the difficult bit of rebending the pipe back."

I haven't tackled this job yet, but I was wondering if this pipe needs bending back at all ?, or is it the case something else won't fit back, if it isn't.

Groover,
Because of the very close proximity of the stat to the bodywork, from memory the stat will only come out backwards or forwards. To take it out forwards means taking the water pump off (the recommended procedure) or backwards which means moving the rigid pipe.
The rigid pipe goes behind the engine, but I never found its attachment that stopped it moving (forget the attachment to the exhaust shield as this does not stop mobiliy much) if there is one. If you could find this attachment and loosen it then the pipe should move.
I ended up bending it, but it was very difficult to bend back.

Matt, thanks for your reply.

The only reason I ask is, according to Mr Haynes,if you were just replacing the thermostat itself and not the whole housing assembly, you depress the thermostsat body twist anti clockwise and remove. All this done after removing the waterpump of course and with free movement.

With this in mind, do think if it was just the depth of the housing body ie minus the thermostat itself,(therefore having a shallower object to remove ) would you have been able to manoeuvre the housing free without, bending the coolant rail ?

Or by the method I am trying to describe ie slacken off the thermo housing, pull tight to coolant rail or into a position to enable you to,
twist detach the old thermostat & remove, twist attach new thermostat, re- insert housing into position, apply new gasket fasten back. I appreciate you have recommended the total replacement, but if the housing is not leaking or damaged.... anyway just an option !

Like I said I haven't approached the job yet myself, but am trying to get in my minds eye the best technique for a job plenty of mechanics dont seem keen to try !! The most infuriating part of all is that you can actually part see the thing when you peep over the drivers side wing !!

Is there anywhere on the site a schematic/diagram of the engine showing the location/ attachment points of the coolant rail in question? anybody please.

Thanks

Groover.

I have to say, I never considered trying to replace the stat without taking the housing away. I am not sure there is enough room, and I do not know how easy it would be to get the stat out of the housing.
I had looked at rimmers site and could not find a diagram of this pipe anywhere.

Matt

Would it be part no. PEP000130 on the Rimmers site?
Looks like there are a number of fixing points.

Dave,
Yes this looks like it. http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-GRID001722
And expensive in the auto version which I have.
The pipe looks to go right round the engine and has rigid attachments, and flexible pipe attachments.
I wonder how much extra play there would be if the n/s attachments were undone.
I also do not know how this pipe attaches to the heater pipes which I think are also rigid.
Hopefully with some flexible pipe to allow some play, as the engine moves slightly and the heater does not.
It would make the job so much easier to do if this pipe could be moved an inch or so away from the stat without bending it.
Some room for investigation by someone. There looks to be many with a duff stat at the moment according to the forum.

No, it's just a diesel engine thermostat.
