Alternator not charging, Diesel 75
 

So after starting the car this afternoon the charging error lamp flashed on, I continued on a 3 mile round trip then on return I put a meter on the battery, engine off 12.5 volts, engine running 11.63 Volts so obviously nothing coming from the alternator, the battery leads are tight and the aux belt is ok, anything obvious to look for?

Brushes gone by the sound of it.

Had a similar issue with mine. But replaced the regulator & brush pack that I got from DMGRS and all is fine.

It's only been on the car for 2 years, the original one was on for 14 :duh:

Can this be done on the car or will it have to come out?

Did my CDti last weekish took about 45 mins in total with a tea break ;)

Undo top of Dip stick and swing out of the way to get access. battery lead off..
I pulled some rubber pipes up & out of the way and tied them to the EGR for a bit more room.

Best not to Drop anything !!!!! :D

Use a small socket set with extensions to remove the big lead, the 3 cover nuts and the 4 fixings for the regulator.

it will be a bit grubby in there .

Then all depending on how good the alternator commutator is, and whether brushes will sort it ?

Either a whole new regulator pack or re solder in a pair of brushes from Ebay at about £3.

Well it looks like it's going to be a pig of a job, the alternator that was fitted 2-3 years ago is not OM but one made under the brand name Fohrenbuhl FA5181 (Andrew Page) and the cover fastenings are not as on OM, 2x screws holding the cover on, one at the front close to the rad but the one at the back out of sight :duh: but not feel, I have just that one to get off then I can have a look at the regulator and the brushes, I have emailed Andrew page and as far as they are concerned it's a complete Alternator or nothing :mad:
searching the web has as of yet brought up nothing (unless anyone on here knows better) and i bet the parts will not interchange.

Bit of an update, I finally managed to get the cover off then the regulator and brush set :bowdown:
The brushes seem fine and free, the slip rings also so now I'm a bit stuck as the where to go next :shrug:

I was under the impression that it there is nothing coming from the alternator it's likely to be the brushes and if the voltage is all over the place, especially high it's the regulator.
