Handbrake gaiter replacement
 

I've bought a replacement gaiter for the handbrake, but I'm not sure how to fit it, and the search hasn't brought anything up. Has anyone tackled this and/or does anyone have any tips? Thanks in advance.

Have you bought the MGR replacement part or the one off ebay you need to fit yourself?

It was from Mr Gaiter. It's just a piece of (nice, clean) leather but doesn't have any clips or anything.

You have to use the original plastic parts from your car. so first you remove the gaiter from your car, then rip off the leather from the plactic trim. It's only held on with glue so you should be able to get it off in one piece.

have a look at the replacement to see the fitting and then when your ready you can glue your new leather gaiter to the plastic.

I used an araldite type of glue as it left some movement whilst fitting to allow me to get it right. Then I used a load of elastic bands to keep it in place whilst it glued.

As BT@Home except I used Bostik glue. It looks fine fitted. Just take your time.

I used superglue and it worked a treat.

Also, on mine, I couldn't re-use the rubber band that Rover use to hold the gaiter to the handbrake handle, as I'd fitted a Freelander handle, and there wasn't the groove. Well there might have been, but I'd cut it off as the handle was too long. So I used the thinnest cable tie I could find in my workshop, and this has held it fine for a couple of years now.

just take your time doing the gluing, as IIRC, it's a bit fiddly, particularly around the front, unfortunatelty where it's most visible.

BTW, Eamonn, I've added the Chrome Trim Christopher suggested for the door switches, around the hazard/doorlock switch surround, to match the gear lever gaiter base. (After I'd taken the avatar pic, obviously......)

I like the look of the wooden handbrake lever grip are they easily obtainable?

They are sold in the same shop as hen's teeth :). Unfortunately the "proper" MGR one are almost impossible to source. Some members have used the Freelander version and it fits with a little modification Likewise with the BMW one.

Not handy, and I'm off on hols, sorry, but the chrome strip is sold by Halfrauds, for aroung £9, for 3.5mtrs of 3mm flexible plastic. It can take over the car interior......................
