mdf speaker rings
Does anyone know if these would be any good or is it necessary to custom build?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rover-75-1...-/371321315640 Would these improve much on the sound on harmon kardon fronts in addition to sound deadening the door panels? |
I'm no ICE expert, but imo I'd think that sound deadening the doors would be the most effective improvement. Making sure the current plastic speaker brackets are in good condition and firmly mounted would be a good idea. I'd only use something like this If I was planning on a real high power system (which I won't because the bm24 is quite loud enough for me to not hear anything else around me when turned up: and that includes ambulances and police cars right behind!

ok, I"m quite new to all of this - regarding sound deadening, it it a case of lining whole of the inside of the outer door skin with something like dynamat and placing a layer of it on the inner door surface, below the standard foam layer on the door? Then make sure the foam is punctured behind the speaker?
Is dynamat worth the money or are there cheaper products just as good? |
rings don't fit, you have to modify them to fit the contour of the door... there is a how to somewhere but I cant find it right now. sound deadening is the way to go.

i will see what they say, but I am presuming that this is an effort that is probably not worth it on speakers like the HK ones. With better speakers, and ones that are driven by amps more powerful than what I have perhaps its more relevant.
I think I will try it all standard pretty much, minus the hk amp and substituted with a 2 channel for the subwoofer only. The only thing I'm wondering is since its peanuts what about bass blockers? I see older threads people claim it can transform the HK system - is that worth it, and what type should I be looking for? BB2? Presumably this should only be used in series on the positive wire on the woofer in the lower door? The other thing is it worth considering putting in crossovers on the hk woofer and tweeter in the front doors? These can be quite cheap - if it is worth it, can anyone recommend any? Ebay links for both would be absolutely fantastic if anyone has any recommendations |
The MDF rings do work for better quality out of cheaper speakers, but they do have to be contoured very carefully to fit the doors.
Worked for me, but it was very time consuming as each set had to be hand formed. Not sure if I would be making any more. Craig. http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...+speaker+rings |
which is precisely why if these ones are contoured I was interested in them ;)

I've never seen them before so thanks for finding them.
I shall order some in to stock and in due course will fit and test them on my Focals to see what improvements they bring about ;) If they are worthwhile I shall see about ordering more from the company and keeping them as a stock item for installations :} |
nice to know I've managed to help someone along the way :)
Do you sell bass blockers Jeff, and would you recommend any particular ones on the stock HK setup if at all, or is your preferred option well configured crossovers? I see the hk tweeter has its own 'passive' protection with a capacitor on the back, but at the moment the door speakers are receiving full range without bass blockers, and I know many have complained about that with hk setups. Bass blockers are the best route in this case right? Or should I look to putting in a proper crossover if I can find one cheap? If it gets too much the obvious answer becomes a set of hertz dsk's as they have a crossover built in, but i'm thinking about the rear doors and how they will behave too |
