Failed MOT - Front Suspension arm rubber bush

I had MOT done today in Souls MK on my KV6 2.0Petrol and unfortunately they failed me on  on:
1. Nearside Front Suspension arm rubber bush deteriorated resulting in excessive movement (2.4.G.3)
2. Rear and Front Direction indicators incorrect colour (bulbs not that orange anymore:o)

I decided not to have immediately replaced and go back to them next week pending your advice.

I have been quoted £200 for fixing 1 & 2 (thus passing my mot).

Could you please advise me whether I should replace only one bush or should I replace n/s and o/s at the same time. Should I use the standard (supplied by the garage) or get the powerflex ones (they last for years - so I've heard...:)? You reckon that £200 for replacing one bush is a fair charge and also how can i check that there is something wrong with the bush in the first place??? (not that I don't trust the garage:shrug: - just want to know I am not being ripped off!)
Please advise on what you think?

take it this maybe the part you need

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ROVER-75-MG-ZT...item2558acc48e

You could actually change the bush and complete lower arm

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ROVER-75-MG-ZT...item45f3150899

bulbs are preety easy to change and a 5 minute DIY job i take it the garage is chargeing near £130 an hour labour charges as i would have thought theres no more than an hours work maximum with a ramp and garage equipment available

Failed MOT - Front Suspension arm rubber bush

I phoned the garage and apparently the £200 including aftermarket Lower Wishbone suspension arm & bush rather than bush and housing only and the bulbs and missing wheel bolt (I forgot mentioned this one:getmecoat: - I had rear tyres changed at National Tyres and Autocare week ago and one of the bolts gone missing - had only 4 out of 5).

Anyway following this phone call I sent them an email asking them to confirm that.

We'll see.

Why are they fitting an arm when only the bush has excessive play ?
OE bush is £74 each so seems a lot of labour to fit.

Imo I wouldn't go none gen, fit once and forget. My ZTT has never had a set yet at 100K+ but I would use OE when the time comes.

What is OE bush?
Reply given by them:
"the worse case for rectifying the MOT failure points is £200 all in. It is possible we may not need to fit the lower arm but we wont be sure of this until we attempt to remove it from the car and remove the mounting bush. Obviously if this can be rescued the price will be reduced accordingly"

OE means Original Equipment you might hear OME which is Original Manufactures Equipment and OME Plus is basically Mods above the standard equipment.

Sounds like a nice ploy, but you know what some garages are like. Just change the full wishbone, it's easier. But not on your pocket.

I got two new tyres recently on my 75. I didn't notice for a week or so that there were now only 4 wheel bolts on both front wheels. They lost my locking nut and burst the threads with an oversized key to get my wheels off. And never bothered telling me.

They obviously feel the lower arm ball joint(s) may have gone thus causing the bush to perish.

Until I had new clutch I had no clue that the ball joint on the driver's side lower arm had gone.

I can therefore understand what the garage is saying. They are presenting you with a worst case scenario and their prices seems reasonable TBH.

Cost me around £400 to have both my lower arms and bushes replaced by Andy Willi from this forum and his labour rates are very competetive.

Chris
