Sorting out gremlins in a '52 diesel automatic Tourer 75

On the experience of having a diesel saloon, I have purchased a diesel tourer as well. It has a few gremlins. I apologise for my saga, but there are a few things that are confusing me.

The battery is new and fully charged.

Whilst the car was described as drivable, the was no LHR indicator, no repeater indicators, no RHF indicator, no NS dipped headlight, no OS main beam headlamp, no dashboard illumination, et al!! Not fun when driving in the dark!!
This turned out to be a poor contact in the main power feed (one of two) for the LSM from the engine fusebox, FL9. Fixing all those faults cheered me up tremendously.

The wing mirrors were initially not working. After much button pressing, gradually they improved, and are now working. I put this down to a lack of use of the buttons.

The Hiline IPK can display faults in amber or red. While faults ARE displayed on the LCD, there is no RED backlighting (the amber backlighting works ok).

Apart from the obvious (that there is a fault in the IPK red backlighting), is there anything else that can STOP the RED backlighting from working?

The reversing sensors have a fault. Sometimes it gives a ~5 second long tone and nothing else, which I presume indicates a fault. (Most of the time it makes NO noise at all.) The rear bumper has been removed, all wiring to the sensors checked for damage, disconnected and reconnected, as well as all wiring to the Rover Parking Aid VHC105180, which has no corrosion inside it or leaking electrolytic capacitors.

Any ideas please? I suspect a damaged bumper sensor.

I also have a permanent amber "Brake Pad Low" warning, which could be the sensor or the wiring to the sensor, to be fixed at a later time.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Ok, now I am really confused about the parking sensors.

I have borrowed a fully working Rover Parking Aid from a saloon and put it in the tourer The Parking Aid does not make any noise in the tourer.

In addition, I have put the Parking Aid from the tourer in the saloon. The Parking Aid does not make any noise in the saloon.

FYI the tourer has the sounder speaker in the driver's area; the saloon has the sounder speaker under the rear parcel shelf, in the boot.

I have put the Parking Aids back into their original positions, whereupon the saloon works perfectly, while the tourer works as described above.

Now I am really confused. Any advice would be appreciated.

I suspect the parking ECU might have to be spoken to by T4 if you change it, but not absolutely certain…

I swapped out sensors, loom, everything but the ECU (apparently it rarely fails), then gave up and installed a £15 kit from eBay – includes ECU, 4 sensors, loom, beeper, everything for that price!

Been using it for about 5 years now.

Before you do anything else with the sensors, put the car in reverse (engine off but ignition on 2) and check that the reversing lights are on. If they don't light up, there is an issue with the switch in the gearbox which are cheap and not too bad to get at and change. If the lights come on, read the next bit.

Best fix I ever had on parking sensors is have a look at the paint on each sensor. They can show light signs of lifting or just general wear. I scraped the old paint off, cut a hole in a bit of paper and sprayed a couple of layers onto the cleaned up sensors. Now work perfectly!

The gearbox reverse switch and reverse lights have been tested and works consistently.

I have observed that the long tone only sounds the FIRST time the gearbox is put into reverse, and will not sound again, irrespective of the number of times the gearbox is put into reverse (from park or neutral), until the ignition is switched off fully.
Once the ignition has been switched off then back on (to position 2), the tone will sound once again (and first time only), irrespective of the number of times the gearbox is put into reverse.

One of the sounders was slightly corroded, the paint was scraped off. This had no effect on the non-working of the parking aid.

The Haynes manual 4292 states that it is important for the correct operation of the system that the sensors are aligned correctly - the retaining clips are offset to ensure this.
What should the alignment be on a tourer ? Can somebody supply a photo of all 4 sensors in the bumper please ?

NUDGE:

The Hiline IPK can display faults in amber or red. While faults ARE displayed on the LCD, there is no RED backlighting (the amber backlighting works ok).

Apart from the obvious (that there is a fault in the IPK red backlighting), is there anything else that can STOP the RED backlighting from working?

Ok. Sorted the lack of red backlighting. On to the next problem.
Is there a HOWTO on fixing AIRBAG lights, as my MOT is due up in less than a month ?

Do the parking sensors need T4 to work properly?

PS I'm still trying to figure out if my car is pure white gold or a Friday afternoon lemon ?

Sorted:

Satnav.
Adjustable wing mirrors.
NSR indicator.
OSF Indicator.
Side indicator repeaters.
NS Dipped headlamp.
OS Main headlamp.
Instrument panel backlighting.
IPK LCD red backlighting.

Still to be sorted:

Brake pad low warning light.
Rear parking sensors.
Airbag light. ###MOT failure###
Hiline IPK LCD display lines.
Check radiator fan.

Any help would be appreciated.

Good afternoon,

the airbag light is an easy enough fix generally, if a little fiddly. All you need to do is unclip the electrical connectors from under the seats, I think it's a 1/4 turn if memory serves, then disconnect & reconnect the connectors several times to clean the contacts. Then refit.
If you haven't sorted the reversing sensors yet, as Hogweed has already said, buy an aftermarket kit from Ebay & install that. I took Hogweed's advice 2 years ago & it is still working well. It is a relatively simple fix, the hardest part was taking the boot trim out!

There is a blue and a yellow connector under the seat. What does each do?

I have already tried disconnecting and reconnecting several times.

Sadly that is a bit beyond me  Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will reply with further details.
Good luck,

Rob
