Auto box fluid shock

I've just completed the service on my V6 and have the diesel still to do, but I am also changing the auto box fluid on both cars. I last changed the diesel at 60k and used (I think) Castro ATF at that time with no repercussions but this time I'm using the proper stuff.

Anyway after reading that the Landrover Freelander uses the same box I paid a visit to my local Land Rover dealer in Ayr. After bumping into a few well known faces from the past ( I used to work with the local Austin Rover Main Dealer) I got down to business.

Yes Jim we can supply the correct stuff but with a minimum of 12 litres and they would have to order it in, ah very good then just how much will that be to me.

A grand total of £178 and this is not a mis print.

After picking myself up from the floor I then visited the ex Rover dealer in Prestwick where I purchased my V6 just last year and they had the correct stuff in stock but in 5 Litres cartons so I finished up with 2 x 5 litres at a total of £83 16, quite a difference from £178 even it it was for 12 litres.

Here is the auto fluid in question part No VYK00040.

Is there a litre missing from each carton?

We recently bought some in and couldn't buy 1 5ltr bottle so we had to buy a box......if anybody needs 5lts ;)

I had my gearbox oil changed at my last service about a month ago (using my local MG specialist, Apple MG) and they charged me for 4 litres of Jatco JF403E auto gearbox oil... total £28.39 (plus vat) = £34.07

I wonder who actually makes this oil?

This gearbox is not only fitted to 75's, ZT's so a generic oil to the same specification should be available. Worth doing a bit of digging. What is Ford, Mazda, VW and Seat charging for this oil.

Found this on an Audi forum site http://forums.fourtitude.com/showthread.php?3846405:

JF506E / 09B 5 speed ATF: alternatives 05-19-2008 03:00 PMhttp://forums.fourtitude.com/clear.gif http://forums.fourtitude.com/images/vmg/reply.gif#1
I've been lurking for some time now, soaking up info around working onthe 09B 5 speed on my Sharan.
Thanks for sharing so much info.
Because I found info on the ATF to be rather limited (apart from complaints on the cost!), I started poking around on Jatco's site and some other ATF-related forums. I found the following in a Jaguar forum as the X-type sports the same box. So here goes a cross reference of JF506E equipped vehicles and the related ATF type:
2002+ Volkswagen GTI
2002-03 VW Jetta
2004+ VW Golf
VW calls the Jatco a "09A" 5sp Tiptronic which calls for fluid part # G 052 990 A2 http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emthup.gif
(No mention of 09B 5spd http://www.vwvortex.com/vwbb/confused.gif)
2002+ Land Rover Freelander
Land Rover calls the jatco what it is "JF506E" which calls for LRN402G aka Texaco N402 fluid
2002-? Mazda MPV 5f31j
2003-? Mazda 6 5f31j
Mazda calls the jatco a "5f31j" which calls out M-III ATF fluid (this is a specific mazda fluid)
Jaguar X-Type
Calls for the following fluid specs
Esso LT 71141; Shell ATF 3403 M115; Shell M1375.4; MERCON V XT-5-QM ATF; IDEMITSU K17; Jatco 3100 PL085 http://www.vwvortex.com/vwbb/cool.gif
The author then cross-referenced the type-specific requirements and this oil meets the grade: Castrol Import Multi-Vehicle ATF as it meets the following:
Volkswagen - G052 990
Land Rover - Texaco N402
Jaguar - Shell M1375.4 (also Idemitsu's K17 and BMW's LT71141)
http://www.vwvortex.com/vwbb/sly.gif
The URL I used is at http://www.jaguarforums.com/m_50821/printable.htmI think it's worth a look considering the price difference compared to OEM ATF..... comments?

The above thread appears to have orginally been posted on this Jaguar forum http://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x-...tf-found-5444/

Doesn't cross reference to any vehicles with the Jatco box so strongly suggest not using it. Don't know how cost compares either, though this is not of relevance here.
