I think a more accurate term might be 'cost saver' but the manufacturers have decided to try and make it look like they're doing us a favour by saving space. Very kind of them - if only I remembered to lift the boot floor and use that inch space to pack stuff when I know I've got a load on...!
The toolkit does indeed fit in the top of a full sized spare and the lid closes on top. It's almost as if it were designed that way ;-)
