A lot of people think head gasket failure is the kiss of death and scrap their cars.
When I looked into it when I had my K series 1.4 Rover 45, I found good garages that would do the work for between £400-£500 using the uprated gasket kit.
(This work included new thermostat and water pump).
OK that's a lot of money, but not enough to warrant scrapping a nice car.
