Because of the very close proximity of the stat to the bodywork, from memory the stat will only come out backwards or forwards. To take it out forwards means taking the water pump off (the recommended procedure) or backwards which means moving the rigid pipe.
The rigid pipe goes behind the engine, but I never found its attachment that stopped it moving (forget the attachment to the exhaust shield as this does not stop mobiliy much) if there is one. If you could find this attachment and loosen it then the pipe should move.
I ended up bending it, but it was very difficult to bend back.
