Either way it looks awful. Any suggestions for something with a viewing angle like on an ordinary LED TV?

One (more) technical area where the marketing is highly confusing for people. A so called 'LED' screen differs from an 'LCD' screen only in the way the backlight is generated. Early LCD screens had a single backlight along the bottom edge of the screen, later had backlights at the top and the bottom. This leads to brighter at top and bottom than in the middle. So-called LED screens using LED backlighting evenly distributed behind the LCD panel. The ratio of LED to LCD is a good determination of the possible contrast quality of the screen as these LEDs can be individually controlled to vary the brightness of different areas of the screen.
usable viewing angles are determined by the quality of the LCD and any mask over it rather than the back lighting. Best advice is go and view some. Find the ones you like in a bricks and mortar store, and then go search for the best price online.
