No I doubt it's a dud. Mine is quite invisible in ordinary daylight. I think the photos people have posted are misleading because a digital camera will enhance it well beyond reality. In fact I've had to fit a completely new back light. Basically it meant destroy the existing system and redesign it. I used 18 amber LEDs mounted on a separate board behind the LCD unit. But don't think about it unless you're prepared to risk killing it.
