As Edd says, it's always good engineering practice to renew automatic transmission fluid and can only be beneficial. Your local garage perhaps had never done this on a 75/ZT which might explain their reluctance. I'm not impressed with the so-called "specialist's" remarks. You would not expect to find sediment in an automatic gearbox which has only covered 65,000 miles. (In fact when I repaired a transmission at 98,000 miles there was none.)

I'd keep looking for somewhere suitable to do the job for you. Hopefully another club member from your area will be able to make a recommendation. Ex MG Rover main dealer Viking at Hedge End, Southampton could certainly do it and they're not too far from you.
