I'm using the shutter mode on a timer so I am not actually touching the camera when it takes the picture, so I know the camera is not moving...

When you say distortion, do you mean movement? If so, it could be mirror slap or movement caused by the shutter. Also do you extend the head pillar of the tripod? Is the tripod heavy enough to deal with the camera?
