Default I'm getting free internet on new sim card

Hi. I've been getting an intermittent signal with my " 3 " provider and today I noticed the pound shop was selling EE Sims and thought I would just buy one to see how good the signal is were I live. I popped the sim card into an old phone I had lying around just to see how many bars of reception it had before committing to topping it up with some credit ( its a pay as you go type )
Anyway to cut a long story short the signal is still a little patchy but for some reason its letting me access the internet from it, even though I have not put any money on it. Excuse me for being a little " thick " but I would of thought if you have no credit you have no internet or calls. Am I missing something here :-))

That's the strange thing about it guys. I've never had WiFi and I've made sure it's not connected to anybody elses either. The phone in question is an old Blackberry and I can browse the internet ( a bait ) slowly with it. I can also watch YouTube and listen to internet radio on it even though the sim card was purchased for £1 and that its not been topped up. Very strange indeed.
