I too have intermittent starting problems which are getting worse by the day but different to the above - mine is presumably electrical. The engine does not turn over ( similar to symptoms for a dead battery or faulty/stuck starter ) at the first attempt but if I perservere it tuns over and starts ok - anyone else has this problem ? Sometmes it takes ten attempts or more of nothing before it fires up ( 2001 75 cdt 120,000 miles)

There is no point tacking a question on someone elses thread it complicates that thread and you will not get the exposure a new thread generates so I have moved this into a thread of its own for you
re your question when it won't start is the starter turning the car over or not. If not have you checked all the electrical connections to the starter? At 120,000 miles is it on the original starter motor? |

Does it make any kind of noise? Any warnings? Do you have a spare key you could try? (Thinking maybe immobiliser if starter and battery check out ok)

Apologies for tacking this onto another thread, i am fairly new to the forum but see the point -and thanks to Keith for moving it for me.
Now to the problem , i only have one key unfortunately that is all that came with the car. When it happens it does not turn the engine over at all. I bought the car with 100,000 on the clock but the previous owner kept all his repair receipts and there is nothing for a starter so an educated guess is that it is the original. I will check the connections tomorrow and report back here, maybe a new starter will solve the problem. Thanks again for the help much appreciated |

So there is no noise at all when you turn the key? No clicking? Obviously before you change the starter, when it is having one of its "moments" check you actually are getting power to it.

Yes it does click but doesnt turn over. I then have to return the key to the starting position and try again and again and sometimes again before it starts normally. I assume that there must be power getting to the starter fo it to start at all unless the pwer feed has a problem

If it does that, its sounding more like starter failure to me.

Yes have a good listen whilst swmbo turns the key the starter is a pre engage type so you should hear a click in the starter if there is something wrong with it, also check the big wire from the battery is tight at both ends
