Default speedo will not work

Hi to you all. Firstly, a big thank you to Mark and Rick who told me the cause of my lights problem. Thanks Lads.
Another problem. The only time my speedo shows the right speed is when I am stationary, it does not work. I started a test on the dash and each clock moved one at a time. The speedo moved OK. I presume the display part is good. Is it cable driven or electrical impulse? My engine is a 2.0l diesel 2003 Tourer
