My late grandfather would have loved this. Back in the 1980’s he used to say what some of these yobo’s need is a haircut and a spell in the army!

In truth he was called up in 1942 and sent to far east as an 18 year old yobo but said it gave him skills and confidence and taught him respect. He stayed in the army another two years after the war ended becoming a lance corporal in the regimental police in India but had to give it up when his mother died and he returned to help bring up his youngest brother.

Another of his brothers, my currently 93 year old uncle Alf , was called up for his national service in 1952 and became a sergeant, staying on another 6 months before returning to civvy streets and enjoying a good prosperous working life. He again says it gave him skills and confidence to become a good boss.

You never know it may give us a generation of good citizens again.

What a wonderful idea. What a great antidote to the unremitting characterless vacuum of what is on offer to much of youthful ambition today. It might, to some, seem a blatant effort to drum up some sort of national impetus for a measly vote, but it has not been seen as that before.

Three years of the Army Cadets in my youth were the making of me. The march through the town of Runcorn, together with Sea Cadets and Air Cadets from the Drill Hall to the Cenotaph every Easter, to stand guard in remembrance of heroes. ‘On Line’ has its value of course, but is neither match, equivalence nor equal to those conventions. I learned more about me than anything else and it has served well.

Conscription or Community Service was always my want for youth. Cubs, scouts, Air Cadets and my College Cadets instilled in me the pride I have always taken, helped immensely by a practical Mum and encouraging Dad.

To try to implement this type of regime on generations who didn't have to partake will be incredibly difficult.

If there is going to be another war, it will certainly help boost depleted armed forces numbers. Let’s hope there is not going to be another war during these dangerous times. It is noted that teenagers who refuse to be conscripted will not be sent to prison but will be subjected to sanctions.

Cool

My late brother was called up to do his National Service in the RAF. He loved it so much he signed up for a further 25 years. Travelled the world and came out with aircraft engineer qualifications, he started on propeller powered planes and graduated onto jets.

I guess that Rwanda will not be the only matter that will be put to bed if, as polls predict, the shambles is booted in a few weeks time.

Community service should be the preserve of convicts who are deemed to be safe and unlikely to re-offend. Prisons should be scrapped bar the bare minimum that need to be retained for the purpose which they "should" be used for.

Conscription
If there is another war it might well be the last one Phil. Also, the volunteer is somewhat more reliable when needed than is a conscript.

National Service as we know it is not an attractive alternative to unemployment (given the associated benefits) and the only time it has been needed for fighting is when it’s too late. But then who would want to fight in a war anyway?

Our national leaders are not exactly admired for their leadership qualities either. Who would actually want to take on that responsibility? It is also not a good idea to hide in Academia in the hope of a devalued modern degree as a safeguard against penury.

What about national service for the repair of crumbling roads and infrastructure? Those that can work should, rather than widespread reliance on charitable benefits..
