Default Ramps or axle stands?

Hi all- What are peoples views safety wise when working under the car- are axle stands or ramps the best? I'm thinking if its on stands and your giving something thats tight some welly there is a slight chance of knocking it off the stands. Then ramps- these are pretty secure(if wheels chocked etc) but the white knuckle ride trying to get on the ramps without going over the edge is something I dont enjoy. My latest thoughts are building my own wooden ramps with 10" x 2" joists (google wooden car ramps and see the Mustang ramps)as its easy on and they are probably stronger than some 20 year old rusty metal ramps. What are your preferences folks?

Ramps are quicker, easier to use and possible safer.

Is this what you mean?

Yeh- thats what I'm thinking of. Maybe not so long probably 12" each step and top step of 18". Timber not cheap though!

Hi take a look here

I have in the past used both and quite safe

but it is wise to alway make sure everything is chocked, if wheels a taken off put these under the sills hope this helps take care at all times.

Google old scaffold planks if you are going to make your own might be worth a try.
