Question ABS Warning Light.

Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone on the forum could possibly diagnose a couple of problems that occurred yesterday with my 75 1.8 saloon?
basically the ABS error light flashed and then after a while went off and then later came on again. Today I drove off with no ABS warning light, then after 200 yards the light came on again. Then traveling at about 10 MPH I lightly touched the brake peddle and it felt has if the ABS had come into play as I could feel a judder through the brake peddle and a slight noise. This happened a couple of times and then didn't happen again but the ABS warning light is currently showing.

The second problem was that the speed o needle started to go up and down like a brides nightie, and wasn't showing a correct reading to the speed at which I was traveling, I don't know if this is related or not.

Please could anyone offer me any advice.

Thanks
Steve.

It is indeed related - the speed is taken from the driver's side ABS sensor.
Sounds like a duff sensor or wheel bearing to me.

I'd try changing the sensor first, although they usually get stuck and need drilling out. Not too bad of a job, leave half a day free in case you run into any issues.

Firstly thanks for the quick reply Mat but am I is it safe to still drive the car on the road or do you think the ABS has completely gone?

Regards
Steve.

I agree, front offside sensor issue.

Worth checking the wiring hasn't been damaged under the wing, but likely it will be the sensor.

Working intermittently as it is, your braking can be seriously impaired, not working or disabled is better - it would then behave as a car with no ABS.

You can disable it by pulling the ABS fuse, or unplugging one of the sensors, as a very temporary fix - but you will have to get it fixed ASAP.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

I had a cracked ABS ring (the 75 doesn't have these) on my old ZS, and it was terrifying. As Harry says, either pull the fuse or disconnect a sensor (either will disable the system) if you must use the car.

I'd advise fixing it before driving, however I appreciate this isn't always possible.

Over the weekend the ABS warninig light on my CDT has also just started to come on. It's OK at start up but the warninig comes on after about 1/2 mile. When the light comes on the car slows slightly like the brakes have been lightly applied but there is no ABS type juddering. speedo would appear to be operating normally.

Not sure what to do next. If it is a faulty sensor is it just a case of replacing the sensors in turn until I find the faulty one? Also is there a 'How To' on the forum showing the procedure.

Cheers
