Central display disappeared

I have only had the car for two weeks and am getting on well with it. But after a couple of days the central display on the Alpine ICE stopped displaying. So I cannot tune the radio, although the sound system works and the computer operated by the LH stalk comes up on the dash.
I have heard that one needs to disconnect the battery for 30 mins or so to reboot all the systems. BUT I don't have the radio code and no on-line supplier seem able to oblige, given the serial number and the VIN. Someone suggested that the last 4 digits of the serial number is the code, but I daren't risk it. Any helppp would be much appreciated.
