Well this is the industry standard test for accurately measuring oil pressure Simon.
An oil pressure gauge is just another diagnostic tool it is useful to have for the problems the OP is experiencing.

I have one, not only to check oil pressure, but also to carry out cold pressure tests on cooling systems to simulate the correct pressure when the engine is up to operating temperature.
