Its not fixed, awaiting a replacement AC comp pump. I would cut it awau but really dont want the jammed unit maybe loosening up and engaging with the friction ring gone. I'm not that optimistic and can see tensioners and a jammed alternator cable with a list of parts to replace just to get back to where I am now minus the annoying rattle. Ofc as soon as the pump arrives I'm off to my fridge fix guy to top up the oil and then replace, do I need to do this?

The system WILL need to be recharged if the guy you know is up to it.

The backing plates loose. Is there anyway I can unscrew the end off without disturbing belt? I've also found a bit of rubber in there so am assuming friction plate is held on by a rubber ring? Either way its driving me mad, aurcons goosed until pump arrives but if I can get that loose plate off in the meantime!

Funnily enough, my A/C pump has just started making a right racket.
Fan is working as it should etc, and it's original at 180,000 miles - but I really could have done without this to fix!

Well the pumps here but despite looking easy enough I'm not sure I should touch it. Won't disconnecting the compressor mean letting the ac gas out assuming theres any in there Ive never known it to work?

No it wasn't. Before doing the rear drums I noticed that a return spring clip had sprung and not returned. Horrible noise obviously from loose pad. All sorted now, many thanks for the advice guys.

This is making a little dinking noise and is hardly noticeable. Most of my horrid noises are gone now. Its amazing how smoothe this car drives now, it even feels twitchy now the wheels all run free as they should and the steerings responsive. Still want aircon though, I remember that dual carriageway on the way home from Southampton where a caravan had broken down on a bridge. Took 6 hours to get there and only 3 and a half to get from there to Birmingham into Scotland.
