Default Cracking sound when opening / closing driver's door

My driver's door makes two loud unpleasant cracking sounds when opening and another crack when closing. Its not the hinges but the metal strip that slides out of the door on opening and back in when closing.

Is it about to break and is it a simple fix?

The bolt which secures the strap to the A pillar, or the two nuts securing it to the door are slack Martin

In either case an easy fix

Or corrosion the the strap which causes the roller to snap. All easy fixes

Thanks for the responses. I've tightened the nuts and bolts as much as I dare, as the two nuts on the door were a little slack. The one on the A pillar was tight. However its still making a snapping sound on most times the door is opened.

As I can't see what the strap goes into inside the door, I'll use a mirror at the weekend to take a look.

You need some white grease on the check strap vaseline will do in fact any kind of grease will do if you have no white grease.....like any moving part they need lubrication occasionally.

Replace it with another one. I had the same problem.

Try squirting in some WD 40.

That seems to get in where other things struggle. It will give you an idea if it's lubrication that it needs.

If so then the white grease mentioned above is the way to go.---

Look at post 32.

The cracking was due to corrosion and wear as you can see on the post. I changed mine out for good second hand units.

Thank you for that interesting set of pics. Must have taken you ages to upload them to the forum.--

You dumped the catches but from your pic they didn't look too bad.--

Could they have been saved ??
