Thanks Mark, but in the case of the air bag light nothing is being interposed. I would therefore suggest that it's not the appropriate word in this context. Here's my version of your post using everyday language:
"The SRS light should come on, extinguish, then come back on and stay on." "If the SRS light comes on and stays on without extinguishing, this indicates ..." I think that's even more clear isn't it, because it doesn't rely on the reader being aware of a specialised maritime expression. Edit: The OED has a definition for an "occulting" light as follows: "A light in a lighthouse or buoy which shines for a longer period than that for which it is cut off". I don't think that is applicable to the faulty ABS light because the latter is not designed to alternate between periods of illumination and darkness as is a lighthouse or buoy. But I have learnt something today so thank you! Simon
