In theory though downgrade rights are no longer applicable, it will be hard to prove otherwise and an old Toshiba laptop for a home user is last of microsofts problems.
not true ... windows xp with servic pack 1 or servicepack 2 are longer backed up by microsoft .i you have service pack 3 then micro soft bak it up .you ca get all the updates and activate windows only if xp has srvice pack 3... op what is wrong with the pc .is it just slow ,can you get to desk top .. if so just do a system restore .turn i back to about 3 months ago ... clear all the cookies in internet explorer . do you have a reg clearner . run it if so .

Chrissy, I think you're confusing support with downgrade rights. You are correct in saying that XP SP3 is still supported (however earlier versions WILL still activate) however Southern Storm was talking about downgrade rights which is completely different and in fact he is quite correct. I always knew that M$ would at some point withdraw upgrade rights for OEM versions of the OS as they had been threatening to do so for a long time now however I didn't realise they actually had.

I used to use downgrade rights a lot as we had probably 8-10 new machines a week and they all came with Vista or 7 but the company standard was XP. Since I started working for myself I've always been able to pursued clients that 7 is the way to go and haven't downgraded a machine in well over a year.

Totally agree Windows Seven is the best OS form Microsoft, I too have been advising people to use it, But should have told them to use vista as at least they would have called me back out when it all goes wrong lol.

I would say to the OP that it does indeed sound like the HD is on its way out so would change that and install Win 7.

To BaconButtyMan:
If you could organize that, I would appreciate it. You have my address, I ordered the 2 x 1GB laptop memory from you.

To Guru:
I disagree that the HD is on it's way out. HDAT2 does a very thorough sequence of reading, writing and verifying to EVERY sector to confirm that it is working properly. This has passed twice. I suspect that the one bad sector has managed to screw up Vista. Hence the failure of ChkDsk to fix the disk errors. Anybody know of a superChkDsk?

System Restore will not restore to before I got involved. So system restore is out as an option.

As to whether or not to upgrade to XP or 7, well that comes down to a question of having a legal license. Vista is definitely my last choice, but as the computer has a license for Vista....

And finally I apologize to any computer users for using the five letter V word flagrantly.

I have just downloaded Ubuntu. It seems to work ok and I can still choose between it and Windows 7 on startup

Got to get used to it though, and some programs wont work with it including Spotify

You will not regret trying Ubuntu. It is very stable and has excellent support. With regard to Spotify, it is possible to run the Windows version in Ubuntu (a full Linux version is on the way).

Have a look at http://www.spotify.com/uk/help/faq/wine/

Hmmmm

I'm not a fan of HDAT2 and prefer SpinRite from www.grc.com. Yes it costs, but IMO the support and results are worth the expense.

In all fairness I suspect the HD is probably on it's way out, and would suggest that you replace and install XP or 7. I wouldn't recommend Vista to my worst enemy.

(says he typing this out on is Mac using Lion)

I am sorry for retrieving this old thread, but it complies so many useful answers. I need a free data recovery software to recover my lost data. Has anybody had any experience with Pandora tool https://www.pandorarecovery.com/ ? Is it as effective as advertized? I'm doubting it's worth the money asked
