My last, and only, contravention speed wise was in 1983. In Plymouth! 35 in a 30 past the Dockyard. On a bike. (Yamaha XS850).

To add to the social disgrace it so happens that I was at the time a part-time motorcycle instructor with a national organisation.

On a session with one learner in front and three behind. Oh, the embarrassment was unbearable.

I was tempted (but resisted) to say it was a set-up learning lesson.

To add further I was also a very fulltime insurance salesman with a large motor/motor cycle book to supplement my pension/mortgage/life folio adventures.

Your opportunity for the course versus the points is invaluable! Any education is worth the time and effort.

Got talking to an old biker with a really nice 1975 Triumph 750 at a meeting, said he'd been done for speeding , he'd been offered the speed awareness course but it would be done online as it was the time of you know what , sadly, he was not computer savvy so couldn't do it , he got stuck with the points , fine, insurance going up etc , he was genuinely gutted , felt sorry for him .

In my experience the cost varies and is not shown till the very last screen so you can stop and try another. I have one coming up where the first one I clicked was £90, so the next was £85 which I booked. On-line is money for old rope for the promoter: no venue to pay for etc.

Being done for speeding (38 in a 40) was nearly the last thing I did in my Rover before letting her go.

Here in NI, £94 for the course, done online. It was a crashing bore, but only lasted just less than 2 hours, though it probably depends on the presenter you get.

The version I did was a complete waste of time IMHO "Now I want everybody to write down on a piece of paper a reason why you might speed, and hold it up to the camera..."), but better than 3 points

When I got the ticket it explained the fees for each option on a piece of paper. The Points were going to cost me £100, the course was £95 and of course taking a morning off work. By the time I paid for the petrol (40 miles round trip) and £8 to park the car it was a costly morning off. I did ask out of interest what effect on the cost of my insurance a speeding fine would cost and she reckoned usually about 10 to 15%.

Apparently over 2 million of us speed each year and get caught, at £100 a time that is a good money spinner.

So if we all obeyed the law and regulations we can bring this cash cow to a standstill.

Then we could do away with the police: what a great idea.

Well obviously, once Joe public steps out of line there is a need for policing, so yes, if everybody was compliant.

There will always be people that think the law does not apply to them. A few weeks ago I was on the M6 in the very long 50mph zone, the road was very clear for a change and there were lots of vehicles either thought they were immune to the obvious speed monitoring system or just didnt care. There was a Sprinter that went past me at well over 80mph and a few mins later a couple of newish BMW's were doing I guess 70+mph. Numerous vehicles were going well over the 50mph, at one point I thought maybe it was an advised limit or I had missed the limit increasing to 70mph but no it was 50mph.
