Default K - series faulty brand new head gasket

Today I discovered why my Rover 75 Turbo's engine keeps overheating and is unusable eversince I replaced it's head gasket.

I have become furiously angry now that I know what has been causing the problem with it.

A faulty brand new part! The head gasket I fitted was wrongly manufactured. A vital steel ring was missing from the fire ring of cylinder three.

I dissasembled the engine today and retreived the gasket. The fire ring on the suspect cylinder three was offset compared to the others. After taking apart the gasket I noticed cylinder three fire ring was missing a componant which must have been as a result of sabotage or a mistake at the factory.

The gasket looked perfect proir to fitting. This missing ring was only detected by breaking the gasket apart.

It's good to find the cause of the problem but you can imagine the trouble I been through trying to fix this.

The HG was replaced a couple of weeks ago on my 1.8k series Rover 45. To be certain of quality I sourced a genuine Payen blue (the latest one) metal HG.It cost me £86 Inc postageas I wanted it quickly but I considered it worth it for peace of mind. They were available cheaper but all the suppliers looked to be abroad and could have taken around a week to arrive.Payen don't seem to have a distribution network in the UK. The only one I could find was Elise Parts.

Blimey, that's not good - was it one of ours?
We inspect all of our gaskets prior to sending, and have had a couple of issues over the years (not surprising as we sell 7-10 a week) but we've fed them back to the supplier who appear keen to keep quality as high as possible.

If it's from us, please get in touch with some pictures and we'll sort it for you of course.

With regards to the Payen 'blue' BW750, we used to sell these but had to discontinue them as we found that 24 out of a batch of 100 were faulty, and they took very little interest in resolving the issue for us.

Hi Scott

That is concerning to hear, although it's the first time I have heard of a quality issue with a genuine Payen gasket. Were they supplied through a distributor or direct from Payen?I would have thought Payen themselves would have been very interested to hear about that batch with a defect rate on that scale. Mine has now covered around a 1,000 miles with no coolant loss or any other issues.

I'm glad they seem to have sorted it - we had a couple of minor issues before this, but this particular batch was the impetus for us to come up with our own solution.

They were through their UK distributor, and confirmed as being genuine by Payen when we returned them - but I just didn't get the impression they were that fussed.
This was about 6-7 years ago now, when I (Mat) owned the business.

Never mind though - good news if they've since sorted it. Means there's more choice (which is always a good thing!)

Gasket was siilver colour with orange rubber seals.

Purchased another gasket this time a N - series type from the same supplier as before.

Fitted that and engine seems ok for now.

Previously overheating on test runs was severe including exploding water pipes and water in cylinder 3.

Water level seems stable after gentle test runs so far.

Smashing news - I assume the liner heights et al were checked before fitting?
I'm sure you have, but the amount of N Series gaskets we see fitted without these vital checks is astounding!
