Default MAF and EGR

All the years I've had diesel 75,s with mileages of up to 180,000, I've never had a MAF, EGR or PCV problem. In that time I've probably covered at least 350,000 miles bin them. I wasn't aware that unplugging the MAF also disconnected the EGR. I did unplug the MAF and it made a slight difference, but not what I expected. I think Arctic has hit the nail on the head (again) with his thoughts about the PCV. I'm now a decent weather mechanic, so when we get a dry day, I'll be changing the PCV and air filters.

Hi
The intercooler itself seems to be good.
The Rover back in 2017, I think it was you who guided me when I had a stalling then non-running problem. It was the high pressure solenoid on the pump. New O rings didn't work but a new solenoid did.
I swapped that for a beautiful to drive but very unreliable S Type 2.7D Jag. Corrosion saw an end to that one plus my frustration with the never ending safe mode with no fault codes.
I reverted to my present Rover about 3o months ago. It was cheap, a swimming pool in the boot, (back light seals) and several scrapes and knocks but drove very nicely. To date, apart from an oil change, it has cost me an alternator and two front wishbones, so until this grey smoke problem, very reliable. I've found that on these Rovers even the discs and last a long time.

Thanks Arctic,
I fitted the pipe that you sent me but still got a leak from the other port. Tried a bodge which hasn't worked. so now hunting for a 2nd hand intercooler radiator. To be honest, the car was tatty and cheap when I got it, so I'm reluctant to spend too much on it. With the existing MAF and the new one the car won't run unless disconnected. The EGR was pretty well clogged so I've cleaned that out. Can I test it in any way? I'm not sure what bits should move in what direction.
Depression rules, not helped by it being self inflicted.

HI Stephen.
Can you put some photos up with what is going on, it sounds like the intercooler it's self has been damaged? EGR cannot be tested a T4 would most likely give you an indication.

wiring maybe faulty if the car will not run unless it's disconnected you really need some diagnostics on the car.

Hi
The plastic end is damaged and I have been unable to seal it.
My problems started with a clack of power, jerky power delivery and clouds of dark grey smoke. I have changed the oil and filter, fuel filter, air and pcv filters and thanks to you, the maf sensor. Additionally, the top intercooler pipe that you supplied has been fitted and a failed repair on the lower intercooler port. The EGR has also been cleaned.
I don't know of any T4 owners near enough to me to risk driving, the closest I think is Fareham which is about 70 miles. I've got TOAF on my phone but I can't get it to work. Reliable garages for diagnostics seem to be hard to find.
I am searching for a cheapish intercooler. Failing that I'll have another bash at repairing the one I've got. Maybe liquid steel? I'll have to read the small print on different sealer/fillers.

Thanks for your time, it is appreciated.

Laugh or cry!
Rimmers NEW intercooler price £219
1st choice breaker AAH, USED £230
That is a rip off

I've just purchased a used one from Breakerlink (BAS MINI SPARES LTD) who specialise in Mini, Rover and Mk1 Freelander. £78 including postage.

I'll get that fitted, delivery 2-3 days, and see if it saves a gallon of petrol and a box of matches.

low power and clouds of dark grey smoke.

For me - it was the top intercooler hose had split on the bend - didn't see it at first it was on the underside of it.

Something else to check if necessary. I'm getting too old for crawling all over the car!

Unhappy

Thanks to all for the assistance. exhaust no longer black. All I've got to do now, is sort out the battery now not charging. I doubt if it is just coincidence.
