rainbow dl-x6 - they are a 16.5 coaxial speaker - should alter the sound stage for the better, and be able to cope with the same load as the rest of the speakers instead of letting the side down

amazon has some great deals at the moment by virtue of postage costs coming out of the equation.

spec wise and rep wise focals and rainbows are in a similar high league i believe, i think the wise choice would be to find somwhere you can hear both to work out your personal preference. Many criticise focals for reasons that I think they are lovely for example! We are all different, so make sure you hear what you buy first is my one pearl of wisdom.

As Tony has said, try before you buy is a good mantra to have.
One mans meat, another mans poison and all that

The base range of Focals are called Access I believe but I haven't heard them myself to give an honest opinion .

My Focal components and coaxials are the KR series running off a four channel Alpine amp plus Focal 10" sub running off an Alpine mono sub amp.
The front end is a Navall3 double din Android head unit

Love this continuing discussion.... all stemming from & progressing the original project.

A lot of good fundamental info in the previous threads - especially to avoid "highs" in the rear being allowed to distract from the main soundstage. I'm a great believer in point source sound myself.....

Good coaxials in the rear will enable better control - or as I've mentioned before in previous set-ups I've snipped the tweeter wires and let them roll-off naturally.

As the subject is speaker choices, types as well as brands/models. Has anyone tried 3 way components in the front? I only ask as it seems that the original speaker holders have space for a smaller mid speaker above the woofer. I wondered whether it's possible (provided you don't want huge bass) to use three components with passive 3 way crossover to improve the sound without needing a sub-amp and speaker? (whilst also carrying out proper door skin damping and door baffling tasks at the same time). What do people think?

Then as I was reading the thread I thought 'Would the tweeters sound better in the A pillars? (only possible without A pillar airbags I guess). Just trying to establish a plan of action for one I come to improve the sound in mine come next spring.

3 way components would probably fit with a bit of fettling. no guarantees, but that gap in the standard pod shows there is room to play about a wee bit. Can't see any reason why with a bit of planning you couldn't get a 3 way set in there.

i believe the sound quality would be better, but that is based on theoretical reading, not practical experience. It should have far more detail as the division between the speaker sets would be far more optimal - best man for the job and all that, and you'd have 1 more. You'd also have a lot more configuration capability with the crossovers I imagine, but again, I don't know too much of that. Far more complex but I bet it would sound gorgeous. As for cutting out the need for a sub, I know of people that have done that simply by keeping the 2 way components, but using better quality rear woofers (not coaxials) that have a talent for bass - e.g. Audison Voce AV's - huge magnets on the things! You could do that and with 3 ways in the front too it would be pretty amazing I'd guess.

I don't know if a good 3 way set would give that ability, but I'd personally be willing to gamble and try it. As for losing the amp, again, your headunits output would need to be pretty good too I'd have thought. The sub you can definetly cut out if you are so inclined with a bit of planning.

With the right speaker selection, you probably could dispense with the need for a sub and an amp. But it would again require some real forethought. It would also require having a good listen to any of your prospective choices.
