Irrespective of demisting & heating the capacity of the battery drops with temperature. Therefore in winter you get a double whammy

I was talking to a National Grid engineer the other day. He's based in Derby and usually has jobs in the Peak District which dictates he has to use a 4x4 pickup like a hilux. I asked what the plan is on vehicle replacement and he said the company has to go electric in view of what it does.

They've tested a direct electric replacement for what he's got and it should do 160-180 miles between charge. When he's loaded all his heavy kit in there, it'll drop to about 120. Then if it's winter and cold and he needs the heater and lights etc. on that goes down to around 80. So immediately, he can't get back to the depot! They're now looking at keeping some old diesel vans and installing rechargable old batteries to go out and meet crews with little battery life to charge them up and get back as an option while looking for other more sustainable options!

I think, if adopted, we all know which way our energy bills are going in future....

EVDogma

I’ve posted on here several times in the past 2/3 years, mostly guesswork and supposition from this sceptic. I’m still astounded at the apparent willingness of experienced car owners, much from er, more mature motorists, to swallow the cynical propaganda put about by politicians and followers.

It’s all about building a new financial climate by making existing industries outdated and horrendously expensive. This EV clamour is all totally without any basis in anything other than pretentious and unproven environmental dogma. I read today that Hertz is replacing 20,000 Teslas with petrol powered vehicles. Now that's impressive.
Threats are now emerging of severe penalties for non-compliance with all the guesswork and bluster.

Dinosaurs? Possibly, but the best defence in the face of unproven dogma is scepticism.

Dead right. Nobody, but nobody, dare raise a finger of doubt about anything those governments want! Paradise Lost. Maybe UK will inherit P. Regained. But don't hold your breath.
It's not the principle that's the bugbear. It's the concerted dogma that underlines it.

[B]Why Have we got all this hassle with electric vehicles? Would not be anythingto do with those atthe top making even more money would it. Another 20 years and most people will not be able to afford a car. That will be ok because there will not be enough electricity to power them. And the plebes will have become a milking minion for those who provide transport. And by the way, I support all those that are going round getting rid of cameras in the smoke and other areas. Another bone of contention with people. We are gradually being forced into a corner by zealots of one kind or another.[

Just as I and many others thought the Government/councils will eventually come for EV's especially as they are overall worst for the environment than petrol or diesel.

However I didn't think they'd start this quickly but Westminster council are upping charges for EV's this is because:

"Vehicles with larger batteries are set to pay more due to having a higher carbon footprint during their construction, taking up more space and causing more wear and tear to the road."

Also Islington council are now charging on vehicle weight and Lambeth looking into doing the same:

Deputy leader of Lambeth council told The Times: “SUVs are getting bigger and bigger and electric SUVs are also getting heavier. This is going to have an impact on air [quality], on our roads and our infrastructure and that will be painful."

also another council person said: "electric vehicles with large batteries produce greater lifetime emissions and also fire other matter into the air with larger breaks and tyres."

I would imagine scrappage schemes for EV's will be a thing before too long.

All I can say is that there is some sanity and realism coming to the fore. EV is NOT a panacea.

We live in the ULEZ zone & have just bought an un compliant 2.8 diesel Chrysler. It's not a daily so will still be cheaper than an EV.
