Never heard of this, but I would have thought it would gum up the fuel filter and surely it would create blue smoke? A gallon is 10 litres isn't it?

If today's engines benefitted through things like this, they'd be doing it commercially. A lot of these stories are based on practices going back decades, when a bit of experimenting could show minor benefits. But that was because engines and fuels still had a long way to evolve. Personally, I reckon you're likely to do more harm than good by following these theories.

It's precisely because fuels have evolved that people are trying this. As I said, the modern ultra-low sulphur diesel now has next to zero lubricating properties, which most of the motor manufacturers seem to be ignoring at the moment. Because of its function in 2-stroke motors this type of oil can not only replace the sulphur as a lubricant, but also burns better than diesel, supposedly lowering the particulates output.

A friend who works at Lubrizol gets engines from all the manufacturers and bench tests them to destruction.
And the conclusions???

I am looking for informed opinions, not speculation or condemnation with no backup.
I think it is a fairly serious subject that ought to be given due consideration, as the proliferation of ultra-low sulphur diesel fuel raises problems that are not being answered.
