Growing up in a rural part of Wales I'm all for lowering the speed limit on some A roads and ALL B roads.
60mph on some of the roads is just stupid. A speed limit should be relevant to the particular road.

If rural single carriageway roads means [to my thinking] Country lanes, sounds like good sense to me, " I live on a 60mph country lane" it frightens me! Dave

Ok I will put it another way if it lowers the odds of anybody getting killed on our rural roads then I am for it. The national limit would remain on motorways and dual carriageways so I don't see a problem with it myself. |

....Perfect plan..................unless..............we stick to the speed limit...............after all, it is there for a reason and not just to bleed us dry...............so; 1. Lower speed limit. = Less serious crashes, less deaths, less burden on the taxpayer.. 2. Install more cameras....who will continue to catch the idiots who think they are above the law... 3. No more revenue from the sensible motorist....mucho revenue from aforesaid idiots. QED |

Here we go again..........
What is it with people, just because a road has a 60mph limit doesn't mean you have to drive at 60mph .....was anyone driving on these roads at these speeds in the snow...of course not. You drive on any road at a speed suitable for the prevaling conditions. What needs to happen is the standard of driving improved.......changing speed limits won't make a jot of difference

They can put the speed limit at 20MPH on these country roads.
It won't make a Penny of difference. There is no Traffic Police to Enforce. There is No Power on half the Roads for cameras and they will just get spray painted like here when Installed as not under observation. |

I'll be perfectly honest here and state that on Motorways I'm somewhere between 70 and 80. I don't go over 80 and I leave plenty of distance ahead of me for stopping.
I know it's wrong but it's where the car and I seem to feel most comfortable. However I appreciate it is completely pointless as even on my trips back home to wales I travel 230 miles each way on a motorway and another 30 on A roads. What does the 80mph give me over 70mph. Well I save about 35 mins each way if I do the entire motorway part at 80mph. I know it's not worth it and it just costs me more. Take 99% of the speeders on the roads. They are doing even smaller distances on smaller roads and it makes it even more irresponsible. In Crawley we have a dual carriageway through the town. It's limit is 50mpg and it's a perfectly acceptable limit. Yes we have drivers who drive at 60 or 70 but they look stupid and we all meet up at the traffic lights or next roundabout at the same time so I say install a speed camera and make some money from the fools. Even though I have stated above I drive over the limit on motorways I'm a fan of giving higher penalties for speeders. If you are cought doing 40 in a 30 you should get a fine and 4 points no the 3 we get now. Also if you are cought doing over 10 miles over the speed limit the car should be impounded for a week and a hefty fine plus points or possible temporary disqualification. Obviously there are instances where the speed restrictions are not clearly signposted or stupid restrictions (such as a road I recently travelled on where it went for a 60 to a 30 and back to 60 in the space of 20 meters.) so some discression has to be taken. Keeping within the speed limit is a social responsability and not just a legal one.

Yup! Two things get peoples teeth gnashing. Discussions about speed limits & HGV wagons/drivers.
