If the liners or flush or low (fortunately none of the 3 I have done have been) then I'd either install shims below the liners or have the block skimmed, but removing the liners is no small job and costs start to escalate with new bearing shells, piston rings etc...

Looking at the corner of the block and head where the leak was - it looks like the mark left by the seal round the rest of the edge disappears. I'd guess that is where the problem lies. Its a narrow area.
It were me I'd check that area to make sure the faces are ok. Presuming its ok I'd then take a lot of care putting it back together to make sure you don't put any sideways motion on the gasket - its easy to damage the bead of sealant. If you are happy the faces are flat just make sure they are very clean. There is no point in skimming just for the sake of it.

Yes if you definitely have some liner protrusion then you will be fine. Any less than 2 though then stick with the latest Payen elastomer gasket, and maybe a saver shim.

I think the block is fine.
The head should be cleaned and checked/measured. And that should include the valves and seats. I would give it a light skim if in any doubt. Any good machinist can advice you better than me from your pictures. |

Your liner protrusions seems OK. From your pictures, it seems that you have had a MLS gasket that weeped coolant externally. Not uncommon with the MLS. New head height is 119mm, skim limit is 118.7mm. You can skim more if you add a head saver shim. Then the head height + skim thickness shall not be below 118,7mm. I don`t think this is to critical, so if you take off a few extra 0,1mm`s it should not be of any harm.
The saver shim supplied with the MLS is 0,3mm thick. 0,5mm and 1mm shim is available, and those need to be bonded to the cylinder head with stag wellseal. Give the head a slight skim, fit an elastomer gasket and maybe a shim and I think you will be good |

I quoted 118.3mm which assumes you will be using the head saver shim, but Rover state 118.75mm after skimming as the minimum. I agree the odd tenth here or there will make no real difference.

Had a close look at the head.
I'm thinking does it need to be skimmed?
