Thanks to Reebs I've been able to open the bonnet. However, what a job...very difficult I found it.
Once I got in I carried out the 180 degree mod to connecter etc, lubed cables & generally tidied up. Whilst the lid was up I topped up washer bottle & oil coz I knew once I closed the lid and it still didn't work then at least there'd be no immediate rush to get it open again. Yes, you've guessed, shut the lid and it still don't open I've now traced the problem to the single cable from the pull lever to connector in engine. I've dismantled the panel by accelerator pedal and see there's a catch that holds the cable trunking inside. The cable itself seems to be stretched? The pull lever is loose so that's why I think cable has stretched. Any views anyone??

Usual cause is bonnet catches rusted and stick causing them not to spring back.
This makes the lever in cabin go sloppy giving the impression that single cable has stretched. I've not had to replace the single internal cable yet since doing these cars since 2005!! It's always the long cable going to the LH catch or the catches themselves need a good strip down and lube.

Thanks for the advice Jules, I hope you're keeping well?
When I had the lid up I slowly but surely filled both the cables to the catches with WD40 and worked them up & down. Both were running freely when done. I also sprayed it around the catches themselves and these too were operating freely. At the car end the cable seems to be too long for the housing by the release lever?
