A dog eh? A bit of a wreck?. Now interesting that none of you naysayers have actually seen the car.

A little about me. Yes, enthusiastic is me. I have a 300bhp VX220 as a weekend and track toy. i have a 250 bhp RS Megane cup as a run around and I have owned the ZT for 9 years and done 50K or so miles in it including trips to Portugal, Hungary, Scotland and the tip with the rubbish...it is an estate after all. Oh and I play in a band so it was my 'van' for gigs. It has been around the Nurburgring and had a day at Rockingham circuit too!

It has been maintained and serviced at Austin garages, my local reputable garage and I did the regular servicing including fully synth oil every 6 months.

I must admit I have let the nuisance jobs go in the last year or so. The dodgy central locking, heater valve, random ABS issue. etc. Basically I wasn't using it much lately so didn't have the motivation to get those jobs fixed.

Then the accident. The insurance were going to write it off because book value is £2200 and the repair quote was £2400. In the end they gave me the £2400 cash and so I decided to sell. The MOT had just run out and it needed a couple of new tyres....a few quid for a MOT guys!!!!!

It went to £6900 because of some stupid prat on ebay who changed his mind early on but forgot he had put an automatic bid on (well that's my reading of it. I have put in a complaint about it)

However I could have sold it 3 times for over 5K.

Its a good car. Mechanically sound. I have given the buyer a good door that I had already bought. Just needs fitting and a respray.

A good mechanical will fix the other issues reasonable easily and cheaply and then you have a good car in my opinion.

Yes its not been hidden in a garage and just polished like some on here seem to think is how these cars should be treated. Its a 12 year old car for goodness sake!

So it is gone, not to be relisted.A nice chap who loved Rovers. Turned up in a 75 estate diesel and has a couple of other cars to. His mate is a car repair/paintman so he's halfway there. Hopefully it sould be tip top again for a few quid and in turn I have had a car that has been used and enjoyed for not a lot in depreciation over 9 years.

Anyway, I'm off to look in the ads for a BMW M5 estate (V10) I need a estate with real power!!!
Fantastic post, cars are there to be used, whether rare or not, and you've certainly had your enjoyment out of this one.

Nice to see you're moving onto something properly fast now though

Nice rant, dont blame you either but why not advertise it on here so we could all have a proper go at it? lol. Only joking, as long as some one is going to get it back on the road thats all that matters. Enjoy the M5.

Here's my take on some cars owners choose not to use.
Some owners (like myself) are deliberately keeping 1 or 2 cars in heated garages and making the choice of never using them on a day to day basis.
We still have the pleasure of looking & polishing them without them deteriorating.
Rubber bits and fluids do not suffer like a lot of folk say they do if the storage area is dehumidified.

We look after a few stored cars for other collectors and they can start and drive 5 or 10 years later with no ill effects if stored correctly!

I agree most cars are to be used but some need to be preserved otherwise there will be no original pristine examples left in decades to come.
Some folk keep money in the bank or buy properties abroad, others decide to preserve a car or 2.
To me money in the bank is pointless as it's not being enjoyed especially with today's interest rates.

Ok they can be driven into the ground then fully restored but these cars will never be as good as ultra low mileage original un-restored examples, and will never achieve the prices of original ones either.

Provenance is everything to a collector and usually increases their investment values.

Our daily 75ZT's are well used (but not abused!) 110k and 200k miles respectively, but it's great for example to get out my sub 5k mile Connoisseur occasionally and move it about a bit and see how these cars felt when they were brand new!
It's like a reference point

There's nothing quite like a new car as they say

I don't disagree with any of that. However, I do a feel its a bit of a waste when you have a car with a decent engine and chassis to not use it to the best of it's ability. It may as well be a 1.8 if its just going to be polished.

I didn't mean you hid anything but as we know with these cars there are always something hidden round the corner waiting to empty our pockets

Your just mot advisory stated noise on rear hubs.

So in the end it went for around £5k wasn't a write off and went to someone who will get it back up to scratch. Good story

I like driving my 260 too much to keep it wrapped up in cotton wool in the garage. Using it every day.

Not really, there's plenty of motors that are a lot rarer than a ZT260 yet go for buttons. Mainly because they're just not considered desirable.

Like anything else it's only worth what someone is prepared to put their hand in their pocket for. I hope the new owner enjoys his new car, it looks like a decent little project.

I think the main issue was your 'true enthusiast' comment. Touch of the keyboard warrior there and not nice.

What motors were you thinking of?

Well I own an undesirable car which is considerably rarer than any ZT260.

One of 79 built, 12 surviving, and one of only 2 in a particular level of trim

Pah, V8, common as muck

Take a look round, you'll find plenty of examples. Talbot Horizon is one, or the Matra Rancho (now there was a car ahead of its time). Tiny numbers left, extremely rare, but cheaper than the ZT-T 260 to buy if you find one.
