Default auto gearbox problem

My 2001 75 deisel developed an auto gearbox problem. Jerked and thumped as it changed gear. Took it to my local garage who diagnosed a faulty pressure valve. Waiting for a quote from them but i think its going to be huge! Anyone any experience with this problem...i guess its an engine out repair?

Default AUTO Jerk

There are known problems with some of the operating valves in the auto boxes but they can be attended to without removing the box by a specialist. Have you checked your lower engine mount as it could have collapsed? Also, if the fault has gradually worsened, do you know if the box has had a fluid change?
Should be every 60,000miles or 4 years.

Sounds like one of the operating solenoids and very easy to test with a multimeter and not expensive to do yourself if you are reasonably handy with a spanner.
Testing is done by twisting open the gearbox connector that is by the wing and battery.
Most common solenoid failure is the winding to casing spot weld just breaks and the solenoid becomes open circuit.
Test as per this diagram(freelander) on the pins shown.
Most common solenoid failure is 2/4 duty solenoid.
Can be ordered from Land Rover agent at about £40 or less from memory.

Thanks Wuzerk, i noticed for some time an increasing jerk when moving out of P or N into gear, but the jerk on actual gear changing seemed to come on suddenly. The garage put the tester on it and apparently it showed a shortcicuit that could be eliminated but recurred immediatly after. Not sure i understand that. I'm not sure if i get them to change the fluid in any case just to eliminate that possibility. As far as i know the fluid hasn't been changed and its got 96000 on the clock but i've only had it for 3000.

Just acquired a 2005 CDti auto with 65K . With every intention of looking after it I considered changing the gearbox oil. I read all the threads about getting the correct oil -which I found-but when I asked my local garage to do the job for me they said they would not reccomend it but would do so if I really wanted. They put me on to a gearbox specialist who also was surprised that Jatco box should have an oil change. They said that any oil change without being able to change a filter would (could) cause more harm than good due to disturbing the sediment. They reakon the boxes should be sealed for life. Not sure which way to jump now. Leave well alone?

The general consensus here is to service regularly (30K). Only half the fluid can be changed at a time so plan on doing it again after a few hundred miles. As said use the correct fluid and temperature when doing it.

More info on these boxes here with a service manual. Click Me

Hello Gary and .

As Edd says, it's always good engineering practice to renew automatic transmission fluid and can only be beneficial. Your local garage perhaps had never done this on a 75/ZT which might explain their reluctance. I'm not impressed with the so-called "specialist's" remarks. You would not expect to find sediment in an automatic gearbox which has only covered 65,000 miles. (In fact when I repaired a transmission at 98,000 miles there was none.)

I'd keep looking for somewhere suitable to do the job for you. Hopefully another club member from your area will be able to make a recommendation. Ex MG Rover main dealer Viking at Hedge End, Southampton could certainly do it and they're not too far from you.

Simon.

As what's been said above but rather than to simply change 60% of the auto oil and contaminate it with the remaining 40% - when you find someone - get them to do a flush - that's what I shall be doing! (Need 8 litres)

Good read off this brilliant forum (Linky)

Default Same problem

Hi all
One of my colleagues at work has the same problem as in post 1
The fluid has been changed(just to rule out) but the problem persists
The gear box jerks/clunks when changing 1 to 4 but not 4 to 5 up or down but reverse is fine

This is the same in all modes ie snow or manual selection etc
Thank you
Regards
Steve
