Question Clutch choices - which Slave

Hi - am on the verge of replacing my clutch - so what is best - Borg and Beck kit plus a LUK slave or a Metal slave - have heard compelling arguments for both types of slave cylinder so would be interested to know what folk think.

For me, jury still out on metal, ive had to do 3 now Borg & Beck clutch and pressure plate and LUK slave all appear to be working well. Only up to 45k but going strong.

If you can get original LUK master for around 70 quid I would chuck one of them on for a complete overhall with fresh fluid and no contamination. I believe original LUK master give smoother peddle to Tazu MK1.

My clutch hydraulics failed yesterday suddenly with no warning. Not yet sure if its the master or slave but with carpets soaking suspect the master. This is the second failure since a new clutch and DMF were fitted just over two years ago. The first time was ten and a half months ago when the LUK master failed just out of guarantee. It had done 3000 miles, another 3000 miles and the replacement LUK looks to have failed. It could be the slave but I cant see any sign of fluid on the bell housing.

When the first one went I took advice from 3 experts who all said go for the LUK. IF this one has failed it should be under warrantee as its less than a year since fitting, if its the slave then it may be off to the scrappy for the ZT-T.

I am told that the premature failure of masters and slaves is now common with poor quality to blame and been the cause of a good few owners to give up or go auto.

My tourer has tazu mk1 and has never leaked but feels heavy 45k. The Arden green one my brother drives has my old master with the little seal cleaned and is still going strong probably about 160k. My brothers main car celestial zt has a new LUK master and the clutch is very light best of the bunch and has done about 20k. Aĺl 3 are diesel with Borg & Beck friction plate and pressure plate.

I'd be interested to know peoples opinions of the metal slave cylinder.
I'm going to be replacing (or getting it done) soon as my slave/bearing is noisy and don't know whether to go for a LUK or pay a little extra for the metal one.

There's currently no issue apart from the noise. The clutch works well with no judder, and the hydraulics have been working well since changing to a Tazu master cylinder last year, but the whine when depressing the pedal is just niggling me.
I'm just concerned that the slave may fail, just when I'm on holiday in Scotland or something!

Personally, I like the Metal Slave Cylinder - we've had better levels of reliability with these than the LUK, but not by a colossal margin.
Both have been very reliable in service.

We have a decent selection of all shapes and sizes - the only thing we don't have are LUK Master Cylinders as we had 5 of the 12 we sold within a year back as faulty.

Do you know what make of clutch kit and slave cylinder is fitted to your car (and who fitted it ?). I have had similar issues with noises when depressing the pedal - I have a National clutch kit in my car, which I am about to replace with Borg & Beck.

Thanks Mat, I was actually going to book in with your workshop to have it done. Might be end of Feb though as I'm away with work for a while.

As far as I'm aware Pete the clutch itself is the original (52k now) and the master and slave were replaced about 2 years ago with LUK parts by a local garage who claim to be Rover specialists.
I'd say the only thing they're specialist in is charging .....like a wounded rhino!

I replaced the master again for a Tazu last year as I kept getting a low biting point.
