Default Crank pulley photos

Hi have looked to see what a dodgy pulley looks like but the photos have been removed. My “ new “ cdti has no air con belt fitted and the previous owner was full of lies as the state of the plenhams and other jobs that had been done. (Not)
I am worried the removal of the compressor belt was to silence the pulley. How do I check. Thanks

The compressor doesn't place a lot of load on the pulley - usually the compressor belt is removed because the compressor itself is faulty.

This video is useful for identifying the features associated with failure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwUSqBefUQ8

Usually you'll see the two 'teeth' on the front are out of alignment, or bits of metal have been worn away from them where they've been 'chattering' together.

If you need them, we do have both compressors and crankshaft pulleys in stock.

Isn't it the case Mat that the extra load of the compressor is enough to demonstrate a failing crankshaft pulley? This is often misdiagnosed as a faulty air conditioning compressor as the symptoms occur only when the compressor clutch is engaged.

Mick; you asked how you would check this. The diesel experts will have the best advice but one method is to buy a compressor drive belt, fit it, get the air conditioning recharged (ready for the summer) and try it!

Check to see if the a/c pulley turns, likely that the compressor pulley has seized and that's why the belt was removed due to squealing, trust me if your crank pulley is kaput you will know about it.

As above what Sean says you will know if the crank pulley is starting to fail or failed.
