Steering Rack Gaiter - fitting of? **SORTED**
I can't fit the new gaiter to the body of the rack. The new gaiter is approx. 46.4mm i.d.. I've tried LMP and even boiling water to soften the gaiter but failed. The gaiter appears to be made of a semi-rigid plastic, of some sort. Any suggestions would be appreciated. (Just replaced both front suspension springs, that was easy to this job).

Hi Simon
Thanks for the reply, but I've sorted it. I sat last night and considered the shape of the gaiter and the end of the steering rack. I found the solution and it was not simple (cause it's the "nack"). Every gaiter I looked at for this application is the same, thermoplastic, and not rubber. When you try to stretch it, it won't. What to do? The end of the steering rack has a dia. of approx. 55mm but opposing sides are machined flat so the dia. is 46mm at that point. So, after the lube (LMP) (directed by helpful hayne's) push the gaiter over the t.rod and up to the face of the steering rack. Then, push one side of the gaiter over on of the 55mm dia. sides making sure its "home" in the first gaiter bellow then holding that "homed" side push the other side (180 deg.) over the other 55mm dia. side into the first gaiter bellow ((at 180 deg.; check that it is "homed". If it is, it will be difficult to move. Now "take five" cause it's a struggle. Finish by using what ever has been supplied with the gaiter kit to fix the gaiter to the steering rack and track rod ends. Hope this helps, if needed I'll post pic's of the steering rack end to illustrate the method used by me. |
