Default Front brake calipers

I've got a bit of a sticking caliper I think, had a wobble when I first bought the car, changed pads and discs, wobble went until I'd done about 2-3k on the brakes and it's back! More dust on drivers side than passengers, so suggests that's the side, but I want to do both.

Jules suggested sticking piston, so I bought a seal kit and went at the NSF. Got the caliper off ok, piston out which was nice and shiny. Polished it with autosol and cleaned as much of the carbon off the face of the piston as well.

But here's where the problems lie, I can't see how to remove the seal that the piston slips out from. I have pulled, tugged and twisted, not shifted at all. The caliper is still on the car, I got the piston back in and re-assembled ok. Good bleed and they are a bit better, but I think the seals could do with removing so I can get to the inner of the caliper. Anyone done this?

The 34,336th 75 to run off the production line of 112,381
This was the 4,730th 75 CDT Connoisseur to be made out of 10,898
This was the 2,647th 75 in White Gold Metallic (code: GMN) to be made out of 12,251 White Gold Metallic 75s

To do
MK2 dials with IPK, FBH repair, headlining repair (again!) and some cosmetics.

Anyone with anything similar? Any ideas on how to remove the seals?

Have you checked the caliper slider pins?

These can cause judder and are often crudded up.

Good suggestion, I was going to clean it all up at the same time, they seemed ok when i took them off yesterday, just can't figure out how the seal around the piston comes off

Many times, to get the piston out you will need to remove calliper, (loose off connecting pipe with spanner first before removing calliper, and then loosen brake bleed nipple, and use a compressor to pop the piston, or remove completely and then pump brake, and piston will come out, but really need two people to do that, and then use a brake clamp, to stop fluid coming out all over the place, and would also suggest that you use a 1/2 piece of wood, as piston comes out with a bit of force. I would suggest that you remove completely
To remove the inner seal, use a small flat bladed screwdriver, and get it under seal and it will come out

Or you could purchase a set of callipers and then refurbish them and put new one on

You can then get new seals and pistons if needed from Big Red Brakes and they are on the bay of e's

Cheers Fusiller, I've had the piston out completely so I could inspect it, but I couldn't get the dust seal off the caliper for love nor money. I tried pulling it up, in and turning, wouldn't shift at all. It's this seal I'm having all the trouble with. The new seals just seem to be a collar around the top, so not sure what preventing the old one coming off.

I have a seal kit to go back on for once I can get this off to replace.

That guide is great Plezier, I was thinking of dropping all the fluid to flush some new in there too. Was trying to work out how to block it.

If it is the outer boot seal, then it will be clogged up. and if you have a new one, then use a small blade screwdriver on the inner rim, and work around and it will come off, they have a metal insert in the rubber cover, and they do get stuck, but if you persist, it will come off

Have a look at this and it may help you, as I have now done three sets of callipers (two complete set on the MGs and recently done Jag One's

I didn't want to force it see, I think I need an old caliper to play with and see how that goes together. I get the metal ring, but am trying to work out which bit of the new seal goes inside the caliper. I'm being a bit thick here I know, but it looks like a sleeve, so I can't see what goes where without having one in front of me to butcher.

Superb looking calipers by the way, great job!
