Isn't Acronis an image rather than a cloning package?
Ghost never worked properly when I used v7 in Win2K. What's your reference to Xcopy Keith? |

i used acronis (on a free trial version) when my c drive was dying (making clunking noises etc). Bought a new drive copied C to D, then removed C replaced it with what was D. Sorted, still running on it now no problems.

Did Acronis use an image file to make the copy or was it a direct clone from one drive to the other?

As far as I can remember it copied straight onto the other drive. I think you start up acronis it will restart your pc so that it can copy all the windows files.

Thanks Gary. I'll give it a try - although from the acronis website it sounds like it creates an image file rather than copying everything direct from one hard drive to the other.

Well, I bought True Image 11 from Amazon and have now tried it several times.
In addition to 'image' mode it does in fact work in 'clone' mode - i.e. it'll make a direct copy from one drive to another. It will clone (or restore an image) to any internal drive, or to an external drive in a caddy - although the latter takes ages due to the relatively low transfer speed (e.g. cloning a 123Gb C: drive to an identical 123Gb drive in a USB caddy took eleven hours). There's also an email backup tool but it locked up every time I tried it (with Outlook 2003). |
